On the subject of music production, I thought I'd share a few thoughts that occurred to me today.
This week Amazon finally decided to deliver a couple of CDs I ordered an age ago. One was Butch Walker's "Left Of Self Centred" and the other The Dresden Dolls. Two very different albums in both style and sound. Butch seems to layer track upon track to the point where individual parts can barely be distinguished from each other. Initially, I was impressed by the "big" production value but after a few listens I now feel it strangles the songs.
The Dresden Dolls record is much more sparsely arranged and in my opinion this allows the songs to breathe more. True, at first the sound doesn't hit you in quite the same way but the more I listen the more the sheer quality of the songs shines through.
Ok, so this isn't a like for like comparison but it does illustrate to me why I dislike much of the current music scene. Time to ditch Pro-Tools and get back to basics!
