MARKET HARBOUR REViEWS

Albums, singles, songs and general Ginger banter

Postby shadow » 2nd Feb 08, 20:22

very valid point skychaser ---theres a lot on vdc and yoni that is more suitable to introduce ginger to the masses-----but the vibe on here is that MH is superior to both of the aforementioned works---i know i believe it is.
i personally think that extensive touring(here i go again ----WITH HIS SUPERB BAND----i think that anyone whos seen them live will agree) and a single which would have to be backed up by some astutely targeted marketing(once again i realise that finances come into play) could really help .
single material from this album? from a purely commercial angle for me its gotta be YOU AND ME THATS WHAT I WANT along with any from REGRET. COM or I KNEW YOU-------other superb candidates are COUPLE TROUBLE and PERILOUS BURDEN etc but on the latter two the amazing performances by the guest vocalists tend to steal the limelight !!!!!!!

Okay,
Ive now been listening to this album pretty much non stop since I got it last Saturday,
I LOVED it on first listen and now in my mind ( for quality of muscicianship and song writing anyhow) this is definately Gingers finest achievement to date, to call it an album doesnt seem to do it any justice, its more like a peice of art! I cant listen to one song alone it demands to be played from start to end, it just doesnt make sense otherwise.

It's the album I've been waiting for ginger to make, recently I have never been too over impressed with a standard Ginger song although the wildhearts album was great ( although I do think now its maybe my least favourite wildhearts album ) when I hear a song like "cant drink you pretty" of "Yoni" I'm never that impressed, sure its better than 90% of everything else out there but I feel Ginger can write a song like that in his sleep!
and Iv'e been hoping he'd shake of the old mould and really explore what he is capable of, and he has....

"market Harbour" an album I can listen to at home and truly take in ( I never really listen to the Wildhearts at home for some reason? I just prefer that stuff live and loud surrounded by you crazy bastards : ) or very loud on long road trips ) but this new offering is a songwriters album. Having spoken to Ginger a good few times I know how little of his personal music taste is reflected in the the wildhearts etc, we are both HUGE fans of Ryan (NO NOT BRYAN! ) Adams who strangley enough I would reckon has had a huge influence on this and "valor...", and not unlike Ryan Ginger now seems to have reinvented himself and basically this album says "look at what I'm capable of!!!"

our boy has set an incredibly high standard with this album and I hope he'll continue to breakthrough into different genres and experiment in the way he has here,

I wont be at all suprised if this is the one we'll be talking about for the rest of our lives

Unfortunately - the PR guys didn't manage to get me a review copy before I went to NY last week.
Got it now and hopefully will get review in there for Friday next week.

What do you think of it ???

I absolutely bloody adore it!

Whilst, in my opinion, this album is completely incomparable to ANYTHING I've ever heard, I was wondering, with the collective eclecticism of people's musical taste on this board, if there was any album (by a different artist) that comes even close to Market Harbour, in terms of musical style(s), production, feel, vibe etc?

Would be really interested in peoples suggestions!

Although i think this album is really good, i don't think the production is anywhere near that of some main stream artists, the varying styles however are really well mixed up in there.

I've mentioned before i think that Market Harbour and touchs of Yoni sound a little on the Cornelius (Japanese widdley-synth madman) side of things.
Some of the strings and organ sounds could have been lifted off the Great Escape by Blur, the strings are particularly Albarn like but more Good, Bad, Queen.

Got to work may continue...

Couple Trouble reminds me of a track by Mr Bungle, one of Mike Patton's many side-projects... Although it's nothing like other Mr Bungle songs, so the recommendation is probably silly. Apart from the fact that Mr Bungle are ace. Buy all their albums!

Mr Bungle are class, they're nothing to do with the bear of the same name though.

The very last track on one of their albums features a pooing man i believe, which i think you'll agree is a bonus.

you're thinking of "vanity fair" off the "california" album. someone else pointed this out to me, and it's true. coincidentally, i bought "market harbour" on the same day i bought "california"!

i must have missed the pooing man noise though, although i'm not sure i want to go back and listen out for it!
IF THERE'S A SOUND YOU PLAY THAT DOESN'T FIT TODAY,
WHY NOT JUST PLAY THE BASTARD ANYWAY?!

Listen to Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "Constipation Blues" some time, I suspect you might find it amusing :)

Bah. "Couple Trouble" is a lounge lizard song (in the nicest possible way - fantastic song), and Patton is the king lizard in lounge lizard songs. I don't know his Mr Bungle stuff too well, but from the Faith No More stable there's Evidence, their cover of Easy, and Edge Of The World from The Real Thing.

Incidentally I think The Real Thing is an amazing album, good in all the ways Market Harbour is good. Basically there's not really a style that's not covered: Metal, Rock, Rap, Country, Classical, Blues etc. Spent a ridiculous amount of time listening to that album.

Hi Col! Yeah, I've been lurking a fair bit and missed the Xmas gig at the Astoria as I had to move house :( Getting Market Harbour has psyched me to actually get off my ass and actually read the board and find the next gig to go to! How you liking the album BTW? Too soon to really tell, but I think it might be my fav Ginger to date.
