The Wildhearts

Just signed for my Jap edition of Yoni.

I'll let you know what it's like.........

sitting here with a huge smile on my face.

This CD is really helping me though a difficult application form.

However, I thought the production on some of the first few tracks was a little "light".

As I listened on, the songs and production seems to get better and better.

I can't say that I have a fave track yet or even one that jumps out. I think this album is a grower, rather than the instant hit I had with Valor.

Valor was far from an instant hit for me.

I downloaded Yoni from the site mentioned earlier on the board.

Well, I tend to go through stages when listening to an album for the first coupla times, with my opinion evolving all the time into what I finally think of the album - if that makes any sense. With Ginger's latest albums I tend to go through a whole other stage, catchily titled the "what the fuck?!" stage. And I mean that as a compliment. Like... remember that bit in Drinking In The Daytime where suddenly the whole theme of the song, although staying the same, manages to turn Indian, and a sitar kicks in from absolutely nowhere for a few seconds? Stuff like that.

There are far more moments like this on "Yoni" - take, for example, the whole of Can't Drink You Pretty, which cycles through about 4 different rock 'n' roll songs at the end while still keeping the same theme throughout. And also includes the awesome line "Your beauty may be skin deep but your ugliness goes the whole way through". The brilliant "babbling girlfriend monologue" on Why Can't You Just Be Normal All The Time? which includes (amongst nags about not liking her friends, never going out and also going out too often) a pretty hysterical piece of personal hygiene advice.

I don't think this is anywhere near as heavy as the heavy bits on Valor. It's a lot less "country" than valor, probably more Rock N Roll. Like Valor, a lot of the lyrics are pretty personal. The hooks and the riffs are all in place and sounding as good as ever.

I think this one is definitely a grower, but I think I am going to love it.

That was my first though too.

Got it and it sounds great... but as with every record he's made, it's way too much to take in at one attempt. I thought that with "Valor", all the Wildhearts records... well, everything except the SG5 record really.

One other thing... there's a couple of things that make me think the sleeve notes might have been written a few months ago...

after 2/3 listens it is not he album I thought it was going to be, but after 5/6 it clicked, and it is a obvious follow up to Valor. Ginger's most pop record ever, but still has plenty of rock. I am not sure if low-fi is the right word (actually I know it is not the right word but cannot thinking of the right one) but the production sounds very erm, accessible (what a horrible word). Endless Nameless it aint. It has everything we have come to expect from Ginger, the hooks, the riffs and the catchy chorus. I really like the piano bits that pop up throught the album.

Holiday - I am thinking the Kinks for some reason!
Smile in Denial - The chorus is the nuts. Another trade mark 'catchy chours'
Jake - Epic. Cannot wait to read the lyrics.
The Night I Was Born- Ginger once called 'LTD' the most spasticated piece of music ever. Well this rivals it. The bass solo is chilip peppers insane
Why cant you just be normal all the time - A solid pop song, the talking bit is a bit distracting though
Can't Drink you Pretty - Ginger does 40's jive music. (nice slip into Pink Panther and Jive Bunny?)
This Bed is on Fire - Nice solo, nice rock song. Classic Ginger.
Save Me - The Epic part 2 and the ballard. Get the lighters ready
Wendy, You're Killing Me - Jurys out
Siberian Angel - A nice solid way to finish the album, makes me smile.

I love it. A year ago Ginger future looked a bit bleak with all his family problems, but this is his most upbeat and optimistic album.

The only downside is we will have to wait another year + for his next album...................................hang on...................April. The Wildhearts. Bring it on.

Aw dam, Cj got delayed again? The song at the end of his R&R geek show interview has big summery hit plastered all over it.
And Luis didnt sound to sure like theres going to be a Sonic Circus album anymore....

I was going by what Hannah said the other day - I trust her judgment!

Incidentally, one last thing - this album is more proof of what a genius Tim Smith is. He plays and/or sings on every track, does choral and string arrangements, you name it. I can forgive the continuing wait for a Cardiacs record if this is what he's doing with his time...

Am so made up. Valor took a good few listens before I grew to like it... this is a complete instant hit with me - but at the same time I know there's so much depth to the tracks (both musically and lyrically) that it's gonna grow on me even more.

there's one track in particular that's very bowie-esque - almost stealing the riff from rebel rebel - but I forgive you ginge!!

Anyone else got any opinions/info about the album!! I can't wait anymore! It's driving me nuts. I can't listen to those bloody previews AGAIN...
