The Wildhearts

Am I the only one who thinks that this record is a collection of sub-standard tracks that shouldn't have been released.
OK, some of the songs are OK I guess, but the production really, really sucks.
Was it mixed for mp3-players onlly?
It sounds half OK on my cheap ass stereo at work, but on my home system it leaves a lot to be desired.
Was this intentional?

Granted I don't think the production is generally as great as it could be, but it's better than some stuff I've heard...("I'm A Lover Not A Fighter" seems muddier every time I listen to it) as for sub standard tracks, there were two or three on VDC that I didn't think were up to much that have really grown on me. Can't really find anything to moan about over VDC.

Meh. There's two, maybe three sub-standard tracks as far as I'm concerned, but the rest of the album is top notch... Just listen to drinking in the daytime... The "that's right, baby that's right" bit, most bands would make an entire song from that... Ginger uses it for a fucking middle 8!!!

Personally I think it contains some of the best songs Ginger has ever written (which seeing he was already streets ahead of everyone else in this department is really saying something).

As for the production, well I've listened to it repeatdly on my mp3, car stereo and not one but two hifi seperate speaker systems and it sounds fuckin great on all of them! Maybe it's the way your system is set up?

i have wondered the same.

i "think" its something to do with gingers tastes, he seems to like a muddy/fuzzy/distored sound which dosent suit everyone (certainly dosent sit to well with me at times.

i would have prefered endless nameless if the production had been much cleaner, anthem was rendered unlistenable in my car (the bass sweeps murdered my sub and my ear drums)

dosent mean the songs are bad, but i would love a cleaned up version of some of them

I don't agree that the album is boring although I do take your point about the production being a bit iffy in places. It sounds fine on Winamp on my computer at work (which is where I've listened to it most) but on my stereo at home there are a few songs which i think could have been recorded a bit better. I wouldn't wanna change it tho -)

So true! It reminds me of reading a review of a Soundgarden single in kerrang years ago. It said something along the lines of "It's an ok song but Soundgarden are playing for 4 minutes what the Wildhearts would use for an intro".

Heh!

But Soundgarden were ace though!!! I could think of many bands who would merit that description more... Most of the Wildhearts spin-off bands for one thing... I don't think there are any original riffs left now, cos Ginger's written em all!!!

Yeah agreed, Soundgarden were a top band and i was really into them at the time... but that quote really stuck in my mind was because I had just discovered the Wildhearts a few months before I read it and it kind of accidentally summed up why they were my new favourite band at the time. You can always be sure that a Ginger song will have a high content/time ratio, if you know what I mean

No way can you say this is a boring album, its got so many different styles of music and ideas.
I would have preferred the album to have a cleaner production in places but i'm kinda getting into how it sounds now and i wouldn't change anything about it.

Just listen to the production on 'Earth Vs..'. That was terrible, but it's still the greatest album of all time in my opinion. It's all the about the songs and the attitude. And the songs (and attitude) on 'VDC' are fucking spot on.

Someone i knew in liverpool last night said it was the best material from Ginge since 'earth vs' and i'd probably agree to a certain extent, save a few tracks here and there from other projects (.com together, church of the broken hearted, phuq album generally).

I know that we'll all probably still keep buying his cd's even if he goes a bit mental in the songwriting department but you can't deny this is one of his better offerings.

fropm memory its not the production, its just that the guy doing the reording used really really bad tape, i think i saw a comment that it wasnt even as good as the stuff he used to record demo's. so i think that accounts for the slightly restrained production on that one.

ever since, ginger seems to like adding in distortion and stuff and thats what marrs it for me slightly

nyanya, you are so wrong. VDC is a great collection of songs. If you think it's that bad why don't you have a crack at writing something better!?
