recent Ginger production issues!

Postby Jimmy79 » 13th Jan 08, 14:23

whats goin on?

Is anyone else really frustrated by the production on recent releases?
(okay not the wildhearts cause thats great)
most of "Yoni" and completely on "casino bay" and "how legends love"
its like listening to a kareoke edition of the new songs!
where are the vocals???

seriously Ginger has an amazing voice, and why anyone would decide to leave it SO low
down in the mix is beyond me

it really has ruined the new solo stuff for me and drives me gaga because the songs are amazing!

yes, i'm with you guys on this one. and judging by the poor production on casino bay, it does not bode well for market harbour. ginger's songwriting is still top notch and i don't want to take away from that cos the man is a living legend and i fuckin love him!
tim smith did a great job on black leather mojo and jase edwards did a great job on the white album (as i call it!) but yet when they worked together on yoni the results were less than impressive.
things started to go wrong production wise on a couple of tunes from valor del corazon but by and large that album was near flawless. who's produced market harbour i wonder? no one is credited on the casino bay single. we wait with bathed breath...

for Endless Nameless part deux, that'd be interesting, who else here wants to hear a full on distorted version of Jake?

I raised this gripe a couple of months ago.

I dare bet Jase Edwards has produced Market harbour, as is the nature of the artists and budget that Round Records has.

I'm surprised people are so down on the production of Yoni. I thought it sounded fine but very different to a Wildhearts / SG5 album so you really can't compare though I think it was better the sound on Valor. Sadly, I don't think Yoni is the finest collection of Ginger's songs.

The Yoni production is fucking horrible, tinny as hell. Also the SG5 CD I have is pretty high end, no bass.

As much as I like the majority, if not all of Gingers output (never really given the supershit stuff a proper listen as ive never been able to get my hands on it) I find the vocals on Inside Out to be to nasal, still a great song but (again one of my tuppence worth that might cause i riot) I find it to be the weakest song on that album.

Perhaps that's how it's meant to sound? For instance I'd agree the guitar is a little thin sounding but it sounds like a typical Strat sound to me so I assume this was intentional (you can hear the same on "Message To Geri" for example). Does that mean it's badly produced or just not to your taste?

And as Butch Vig once pointed out, unless you get the producer to come and set up your stereo and listening environment every time you listen to the CD then you will probably never hear how it is intended to sound anyway - there is a massive difference in the reproduction on different equipment.
