I'm not a performer myself (don't say a chuffing word), but would think that live performances and new material/studio recordings pretty much go hand in hand.

Reviews of Gingers' performances especially, suggest that he bounces off the audience's reaction - which I think is safe to assume will inspire, influence, and encourage, his song writing.

Writing without live performances would only leave record sales as an indicatior of both success and as a line of encouragement; but if it's the B Side the fans go mad for, or have, um, "file shared" then this isn't a true result either. Knowing the reactions' they (he?) is able to provoke must lead to the thoughts that, "I can't wait till they see / play this one live - they'll love it".

Why would the band write and release new material then not tour it? It is a silly poll for the Wildhearts. They're not the Beatles. Without touring they can't afford to record, without recording they have nothing new to tour for. They're symbiotic.

It wasn't an actual scenario that Nuno was going to put forward to the band, he was just basically asking if you have a preference between live shows or new albums and if you had to choose what it would be.

Someone has come up with a topic to discuss and there's posts saying "what a stupid question" etc. Does is really matter if it's a hypothetical question?

Honestly, I could totally do without live shows, but I know I'm a weirdo. I do see the Wildhearts anytime they play within driving distance... but I think that's more about showing my support and trying to give them as much of the success I think they deserve as I possibly can.

I wouldn't say I could do without them, but I don't enjoy them as much as a lot of other people do. Well. saying that, I enjoy them when I am there but sometimes the thought of having to get to the venue/get home, get served at the bar, get a good view, watch support bands I don't really have interest in and other stuff brings the experience down a bit.

But then the band walk on stage and crank out a riff and everything is good again.

This was spawned of conversations I've had with a friend of mine all the time. He's a big fan of a lot of 80's rock bands that are no longer together, and whenever talk of a reunion comes up his excitement seems to be geared more towards seeing them live again than around hearing a new album from them. .

i think the thing to be remembered here is that the majority of these bands have already released the best material, and usually the last couple of albums before collapse are pretty crap. With the wildies we get good tracks on every release. with the 80's bands all we want is the nostalgia experience as they will never improve on the classic albums released earlier in their careers. I have recently (in the last couple of years) seen Kiss, Crue, Pussycat etc and went for the greatest hits thing rather than any new stuff that may have been released.

I think maybe that this poll would have flowed better on a larger scale - dudes are taking the Wildhearts suggestion too literally, I think; maybe had it been open to a bigger proposition, like gigging for any band was to cease if they stopped making records or...something, I don't know.

To answer the question, generally speaking I love live shows but I also dig just kicking back and listening to a record a few times, having a beer, chilling out...going to a gig can't be replicated but relaxing can, so if I HAD to pick, gun to my head and all, I'd probably say B (and then regret it when I fancy a night out).
