New Single - Destroy All Monsters - Thoughts?

Ok, so now we all know that Destroy All Monsters will be the next (and by the sounds of it, the last from s/t ) Wildhearts single.

Im I the only one who is bloody over the moon at this news ! I mean, what a fuck you to the mainstreem! Maby the thinking was "Ok we'll release something quite strightforward and instant in 'The New Flesh' as first single but if that dosent take off then fuck it - lets go all out and release the most ugly and abbrasive track on there with 'Destroy all Monsters'!! And if thats not enough, lets make a polor opposite to the kid filled positivity of the 'Flesh' vid and go all out Hammer Horror with blood and gore to boot!"

Maby Im overanalysing this but it just makes me happy that the Wildhearts still have the power mix things up with such credibility. Honestly, when the album first came out would anyone have given 'Destroy' a hope in hell of ever getting a single release (despite how good it was)? No one.

The Wildhearts maby had another crack at breaking the mainstreem with 'New Flesh' (which I still love, incidently) but I hope they know that as benifitial as the mainstreem can be (ie. money) they have the best fans in the world and as long as they keep confident and dedicated the rewards will come from the commitment of the fans and belivers. Aulthough Im shure theyd think some money would be nice too.

On the other hand of course, choosing to make a video as outragious as 'Destroy' is turning out to be may be a subversive effort to stir more media attention (which seemingly has already worked wonders going of that magazine artical) After all which vid is gonna stand out and be remembered more on say Kerrang or Scuzz for instance? One in black and white with kids playing the bands instuments and some deep meanings of the transition from the 'old guard' to 'the new flesh' OR an all out blood dreanched mock horror fest with freaks and gouls suspendid from cealings and an alien abortion.

All that said, Im more than happy with the choice. I'll deffenately be buying it and encouraging others to do so.

So what does the rest of us think then? Motives behind it? Good choice/Bad choice? What other songs should have been chosen instead?

I've been saying since day 1 that DAM would have been my first choice as a single, but given that songs like The New Flesh, Top Of The World and So Into You have been the band's most recent single choices, I feared that the heavier and uglier side of the Wildhearts was becoming something of an irrelvant quirk... something they keep around for the fans, but not something they wanted to expose the rest of the world to, or try to market themselves by, while for me, it was one of two or three key defining features of the band.

For me, this is the best news I could have possibly heard from this band at this point. I've always lumped this band in with heavier bands like Metallica, System Of A Down, Rage Against The Machine, etc... they belong at Ozzfest. Yes, this is a band that is known for writing quality music that gets stuck in your head for months, but more importantly, this is a band that is known for being a huge monster of raw power that does not pander for radio play or record sales and never, ever makes apologies.

When the video for The New Flesh came out, I hate to say it... but I was reluctant to post it at the other boards I post at because in today's musical climate, it doesn't stand out as anything particularly special, and frankly... when I did post it, it got mostly lukewarm and apathetic reviews. This song, however, among those I've played it for has gotten the, what I consider to be, very, very healthy love/hate reactions. Some people thought it was the worst pile of shit they've ever had to sit through and some people thought it was a work of pure genius and found it to be positively amazing.

THAT is what this band needs. The people don't want their asses kissed, and that's what The New Flesh did. This song is a clear message of, "This is The Wildhearts and here to say what we want to say, we're here to put a dent in your skull and we don't fucking care what you have to say about it, so kindly bend the fuck OVER!".

as a counter to cookie cutter artists/singles/albums then yep it couldnt been a more perfect choice.its a challenging song, very very dynamic and over the top rifftastic. a great choice to fuck with peoples heads

add this in with the promo video and i would say you are looking at a definite talking point as opposed to 'The New Flesh'

I'm suprised, but glad that DAM is the next single. New Flesh, Top of the World etc are good songs but the novelty of "radio songs" wears off quite quickly (with me anyway) and although I like the songs, I don't see them as being classic wildhearts songs at all. Not "representive" of what the band can do.

I think after The New Flesh was ignored (again) I wouldn't be suprised if the band have just given up trying to win people over (if of course, that is what they were trying to do) and have gone back to "classic wildhearts". I hope so anyway.

As for the video...I'm not a great fan of gore but I'll probably watch it once at least, bit of an odd idea in my opinion but who am I to judge lol (I doubt I could've come up with anything better or controversial.

If it had been my choice I would have released Slaughtered Authors as a single but knowing the state of British charts...that would more than likely have been ignored too.

(p.s. had it not been for the mad video I reckon DAM would've had more chance of been played on scuzz/kerrang than New Flesh.

Great song for me, and I must admit more representative of the album, although The New Flesh is a good song also.

i said elsewhere on this forum that monsters would make a great choice for a single. i do not see it as challenging a t all. it's catchy and quirky which seems to be ripe for the emo kids and the hardcore rockers - a radio edit wouldn' necessarily include the long riffing section towards the end. not sure about the video - i didn't like the psycho cyborgs.

Well there're still a couple of unreleased album session tracks...

Depends. If you know someone with a decent DV camera, the right editing software, and a few good ideas, you could do it for the cost of a few beers (Or a fiver in the case of Red Light, Green Light). On the other hand, if you've got a record company behind you, it will inevitably cost thousands.

I wouldn't hold your breath for the DVD compilation. It would currently involve negotiations with three ex-record companies and counting.

Have to say though, I don't see the point of releasing it with huge chunks cut out. It's really nothing special without the riffery. I'd have released Revolution... but, hey, what do I know...?

Destroy All Monsters is far and away my favourite track off the self titled album so I'm super chuffed it's been picked as a single! I do hope they release the full version though as the riffing section is part of what makes it so good. I also reckon that people who thought The New Flesh was lame cos it was too pop (yeah I'm talking to you Charlie from Buste.. er Fightstar!) will be in no doubt that The Wildhearts can still bring the rockness!

Big mistake not releasing Bi-polar Baby as single no. 2 mind, I can actually picture the video for that in my mind and it looks c.o.o.l. !

Couldn´t care less about what song they release as next single. My mind is set to one thing: B-sides!!

In my book all the tracks on the album are great and many should be hits, but the reality in the music world 2007 dont work that way. So I think its a great idea to release Destroy All Monsters as a single, and the video looks interesting.

I think it's a bold and brave choice for a single - and that in itself should be applauded. I mean a song singing about disembowling the former love of your life is striking to say the least.

To me, it's in a similar vein to Eminem's Kim. A song that is grisly and shocking in it's imagery and choice of word, but is not about advocating violence - more about expressing how vitrolic someone feels.

Also to go from cute (the New Flesh) to horrific in the space of two videos is also a great artistic statement in itself. How many other bands can you think of that mess with expectations and convention than the Wildhearts?

I agree, it wouldn't be as good chopped down. Also I think revolution would be more radio friendly, not that they'd get played.... i reckon it's more accessible to someone who hadn't heard them before as a pose to Monsters.
