Anyway, I doubt we'll drum up too much support for this idea. What's the point of scraping the band into the charts at no 38, or worse still, not making the top 40 at all?

I read recently that it only takes 4000 sales in a slow week to reach number 1 in the charts. We should be aiming for top 10, and something like this needs to be planned weeks, maybe months in advance, with new material, magazine promotion, radio play and a tour by the band. That's how we'll get them to chart again.

you've got a good point dude, i had the same thought meself about downloading a song i already own but it's only goin to cost a few pence (isn't it ean?) so lets all give it a go an see what the results are.

Dinnae want to put a damper on things but Inglorious has a point - this needs to be marketed well and thought about if the aim of the thing is to get a Top 10 place.

How many downloaded 'The Sweetest Song' from The WH when it came out? That was a new song with some sort of promotion (admittedly not a lot) and a unique version with no sweary words.

I even signed up to iTunes to to download it. If that can't chart that well, I don't believe this idea will. & you're also trying to get agreement from this site... we're all to diverse for that!!

Hey Ginger himself has stated he's not looking for chart positions - they seem to make a reasonable living, tour the world (some parts) and release cracking music.... I genuninely believe that one day a Car advert or Film soundtrack will get them a chart position... but so what?! Hey they're back to playing the Barrowlands at their Xmas Shows - that's movement based on great shows and solid music.

Hmmm... if eastwest could be brought on board (and we all know how helpful they've been to The Wildhearts in the past :? ) as they will own the rights to the track, then there's something that could be done to re-launch a song without needing to go to very much expense.

Chart rules allow for a maximum of three physical formats, plus three "download bundles", plus unlimited alternative versions of the same title song. A bundle takes the form of a lead track, 1 or 2 B-sides, and downloadable artwork.

So without needing to manufacture a physical product and get it into the shops, eastwest could go through the vaults and find some b-side material (unreleased live versions, demos etc), knock up 3 different bits of artwork, and provide 3 worthwhile products offering something we don't already have, all at the very reasonable price of 79p per bundle.

They could then dig out the early demo and several live versions, and make all of these available for download in their own right.

Get 'em registered at charts central in Leamington, get 'em advertised on here, and hey ho we now have an incentive for hundreds of Wildhearts fans to download several chart-eligible formats, even though we all already own the final version of the song.

And I HATE downloads, but if there's something exclusive and official included then it's a different matter.

It's worth pointing out that only one download of a single *per computer* will count to the charts, so there's no point doing multiple downloads of the same track - they simply won't be counted. But different bundles and different versions all count as different formats, therefore multi-format sales WILL all count towards the chart position.

So there you go - a strategy for a hit single with virtually no outlay/risk on the part of the record company.
