How is it, exactly, that we ended up with two different mixes on the single and an entirely different mix on the album itself?

I heard somewhere that Danny had some issues and the Ginger had to take over on bass for some things. Does this have something to do with that?

Sorry for my ignorance, but when this particular reformation happened, I completely missed it until well after TWMBD was released.

The mixes on the singles were almost 100% the same. One is just a bit more "punchy", kinda like the differences between the two mixes of RLGL, only even more subtle.

The one on the album is a completely new recording. So was Vanilla Radio. It was never explained why, but my gut feeling is that with Danny out and Jon in, rather than recycle recordings containing Danny, they'd start the album fresh with the new lineup, even if they had already written two songs for the album.

I see. I had always assumed the Spike Drake mix appeared on the album and never really gave it a close listen. After having gone through them all with a more careful ear, I've decided that I definitely prefer the single versions over the album version mostly because they have less of the lead guitar thing during the chorus that kind of echoes the lyrics. That part always bugged me in that song. I'd just as soon they'd left that out altogether.

You're right about the two single mixes being pretty much the same though. The main thing that jumped out at me is that the GR version has much cleaner, less cluttered vocals, whereas the SD version has got some echoes on it during the spots where the vocals pick up leading into the chorus... and I kind of think there is too much mixed into all of the tracks from this era to begin with. I guess the Gordon version feels very, very slightly less produced and layered.

Danny didn't play any of the bass parts on the album - he left for re-hab the day before he was due to start recording his parts. As time was of the essence and there was no time to find a replacement Ginger played all the bass parts on the album himself.

I think the album version of 'Vanilla Radio' is a reworked and remixed version with extra guitars added rather than a complete new recording. I think the original single version is much better. If it ain't broke - don't fix it...

I hear ya, and I completely agree.

In a bizzarre coincidence, within a couple of minutes of me making the above post 'So Into You' randomly played on mi-Xfm - the first time I've heard the Wildhearts on there!

I know Danny never played on the album. My mistake was thinking that Jon did. Thanks for clearing that part up.

And I'm positive that VR is a completely different recording. Just listen to the vocals, and listen to the drums when everything but them cuts out.

Regarding Vanilla Radio: both versions are roughly equal in my mind, but I am definitely thankful that when they re-recorded it, they didn't go with the squealy harmonics thing that they do live all the time.

based on that, I can see how you would think that it is the same recording, but I am still sure it isn't, and any implication that they were was accidental.

i prefer the original drum sound that was on the single of VR

another reason for re-recording 'vanilla' would be to make sure if 'fit' better with the rest of the albums sound , having been produced for the RARAMFR sessions it might have jarred elsewise or something more technical than i totally get
