"The Wildhearts have just completed work on a covers album tentatively titled 'Stop Me If You've Heard This Before Vol 1'.

Artists covered include: The Icicle Works, Fugazi, Helmet, Lee Harvey Oswald Band, The Distillers and Descendents.

Said frontman Ginger: "We've tried to stay as true to their songs as possible, obviously some of these songs are over 15 years old and have to be sped up a bit, or sound a bit different because obviously I'm not a girl in the case of The Distillers for instance! But we haven't tried to do a reggae version of a punk song or anything, we're keeping it fairly faithful to the music that inspired us."

Expect a release early next year on Round Records. "

Which possibly explains a lyric request that Kris posted and removed a week or so back... :?

Sounds interesting, but I'm hoping there's a few covers of non-obvious bands.

Having said that I'm sure it'll be a fine piece of music. Nevertheless, I hope this isn't the album we've been promised, sounds a wee bit self indulgent to me. And having said THAT the Wildeharts are pure self indulgence anyway so I can't really complain.

Love to all xx

One of the things I love most about WH is the fact that they have so much original material and never have to do covers or live-versions for b-sides or album filler-tracks.

I was very dissapointed when I found out about this cover album, and I really hope its not the album CJ talked about. Wildhearts are not a band that should do this, they are too colorful and original. IMO!

What are people complaining about? If it's true I think that's ace. They've never done an album like that before, but the few covers they've done show that they always bring something good to it...

Well if its good enough for Metallica to do. Then it's good enough for WH I say.

I've got no problem at all with this. A cover album like this can be seen as an attempt to cleanse the impurities and get back in touch with some of the early sensibilities.

No way! Metallica have overdone the cover-thing because the needed to, and when they released that double cover CD it was very clear that the bands songwriting idea was running dry around that time. Its´a weakness that the best stuff Metallica have done the last billion years are songs written by others.

Wildhearts ar a much better, more original and better songwriting band than Metallica will ever be. Unlike Metallica, Wildhearts will never need to do a cover album. So unless Ginger and CJ have run completly dry of ideas, than I dont understand this release. And, for me personally its much more interesting with an album of Wildhearts original tracks than the Wildhearts fooling around with some old music.

I guess it would be an ok idea for Ginger to do it as a solo thing or Silver Ginger or Sonic Circus or.... But its my strong point of view that an orginal and colorful songwriting force like The Wildhearts should never do a cover album.

BTW: Ginger could fart a better Metallica album than Hetfield/Ullrich could come up with in 5 years. IMO. 8)

I'm not sure I'd have flagged any of the bands mentioned as obvious?

They could have gone the easy way and covered a song by everyone mentioned in 29x The Pain or something... :)

this covers album was already written by other artists, all the band have done is re work the music and that couldn't have taken them that long to do, the rate that ginger knocks out new material we'll prob have another proper release a few months later anyway. the more material the better i say.
