The first time you heard THE WiLDHEARTS?

Given tomorrow's gig, thought it could be nice to reminisce about the first time you heard the band?

For me, the first rock band I loved was Guns N Roses and never listened to much else, then I bought this Kerrang! double cassette to get to hear some new music and I heard Caffeine Bomb for the first time......and was completely blown away. Rushed out and got Earth Vs.. and at first it I couldn't get my head round it, I'd never heard music that heavy but melodic before, great big riffs with harmonies and massive choruses.

So mine wasn't at a gig or anything earth shattering but I still remember that cassette and listening to that song. I can't really remember anything else that was on the album.

I bought Earth Vs. on cassette because the song title "My Baby Is A Headfuck" caught my eye, and because there was nothing else I was particularly interested in buying that day.

I'd never heard of them before then.

A quick trip down memory lane...

After being into Queen and ELO in my youth, I got lost in the indie wilderness for a year or two before finding G n' R and Metallica, from where I found Megadeth, Sepultura, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and eventually The Almighty.

I'd check out Kerrang, and one time on the cover was Ricky Warwick alongside some arrogant git saying he was in the best band in the UK. Kerrang were also giving them loads of praise, so I bought 'Earth Vs...'.

My first introduction to The Wildhearts was hearing the opening of Shitsville and being pleased it was heavy...and then the chorus began and I was stunned with the harmonies and melody that fitted perfectly with this heavy music. The CD lived in my CD player from then for at least 3 years.

So tonight is gonna be special - my ultimate band playing my 'first love'. I can't wait.

....and I really like both support bands too, so I'll be down front all night.

My dad bought 'Earth Vs...' the week it came out (I think he'd based the purchase simply on having read a good review...but i can't say for certain...how my dad discovered/discovers some of the music he has/does is a mystery to me).

He sat the 13-year-old me down and MADE me listen to it saying that if I didn't I'd regret it. I listened. I fell in love...and I still am

i was sat on the 484 bus between Holmfirth and Wakefield one morning on the way to work during the summer of 1993, and the lad in front of me had a copy of Kerrang with a feature on the Wildhearts. i read it over his shoulder, and that was it! Hooked!

I remember my first experience of The Wildhearts being hearing Nothing Ever Changes but the Shoes on Raw Power/The Power Hour(whatever it was at the time) and although i liked it i wasn't impressed enough to go out and but Mondo Akimbo a Go-Go(feel like a twat now).
A wee while passed and my mates saw them supporting Love/Hate(?) and nothing they said made me want to jump out and buy stuff.

Then i had my first live experience of them supporting The Almighty and i was totally blown away.They were outstanding.Even Nothing Ever Changes which i had thought was just ok sounded immense in Barrowlands.I remember shouting Headfuck at totally the wrong times all the way through the song.

The next day i was straight into Up Records in Ayr to buy Earth vs and had a big conversation with Ewan the owner(who is now part of Muses management team or something).I also remember going to Ayrs rock club not long after and Ewan actually played the album the whole way through from about 11.45pm which totally bemused the customers but 3 of us were up "dancing" to the whole album ourselves only to face heavy questioning when we got off the dance floor as to who the band were.

From then on The Wildhearts were regular players on the Powerhouses playlist for a while and the carnage when theyfirst played Caffeine Bomb was brilliant.

My first introduction to the Wildhearts was when I was about 16-17 I think. I'd borrowed a CD ROM drive to try with my computer (being the geek I am ), and at the time I didn't own a CD player, so didn't have any CD's to try with this. So off I went to John Menzies (remember them before they became WH Smiths?) and had a look around the magazine section looking for magazines with free CDs on their covers, and I came across a magazine called Metal CD. "Perfect" I thought - "it's got a CD, and it's got metal on it!.

I got it home and stuck it on. The first track was Dio "Jesus, Mary & The Holy Ghost". And the 2nd track? Dangerlust. I remember being totally blown away by what I was hearing, and once that glorious ending had finished, I immediately played it again! It took me some time to actually get through the whole CD! I kept on coming back to track 2 and loved it to bits.

So that's how I got to know of the Wildhearts, and that's why I'll be going mental when they play tonight

A satellite TV-show played the video for "Nothing ever..." a couple of times. I loved it to pieces. Living in Norway, Wildhearts was not something you found in a record store those days. But later that year I found the Earth VS as import in a store, and was very dissapointed that "nothing ever..." was not listed on the cover. I bought it anyway, and it really changed my life forever. The best collection of rock and roll tracks to ever be made.

First time I heard the Wildhearts was an absolute revolution. I'd heard of them through the rock press, but had never actually HEARD them, but saw the If Life Is Like A Lovebank single (sadly not the fake wallet one) for the princely sum of £1.00 at a car boot sale and snapped it up. Hearing the Hate The World Day and Fire Up for the first time was a joy - and sold me hook line and sinker. Incidentally, if I ever find that I haven't listened to the wildhearts for a while, these are the first two tracks that I go back to.

1996 my brother had boke up with his girlfriend, and had moved back in with me and my mom and dad.

he gave me a bunch of cd's to listen to

and i put the wildhearts off till last cos id never heard of them,
so when i finally came around to putting it on (no pun intended) i was amazed, my brother came home and dug out earth vs and dont be happy for me

I was a late developer into rock music, previously liking stuff like "Go West" by the Pet Shop Boys, and Bad by MJ. Also quite liked Tori Amos.

Then my friends started listening to Ugly Kid Joe, which I got quite into, and Smash by The Offspring. And the, one fateful morning when Chris Evans was doing the breakfast show in 1996 (I think it was) on R1 he had I Wanna Go as his record of the week - my bus pal (this was the school bus) and I were amazed by this song, I absolutely loved it, heard it every day for a week and then on the Saturday went and bought the CD Single - the first CD I ever bought. Can't Do Right For Doing Wrong become my favourite ever song - it's still well up there.

I think it was when the late Alan Freeman and Tommy Vance both had weekly rock shows. They started playing a couple of songs called 'Nothing Ever Changes...' and 'Turning American' and I'd never heard anything like it. This was the music I'd been wanting to make myself, and now this new band had beaten me to it! I was hooked straight away and bought 'Mondo Akimbo', then 'Earth Vs...' as soon as it came out.
