I'm not sure I totally agree with that statement. The music I listen to still goes hand in hand with the way I dress, the people I choose to hang with and the places we go. Cause or effect? I'm not sure, but it sure beats defining myself by the dull job I do.
True, I still have some sort of identity based on the music I listen to. Hell the music I play, acoustic rock pop stuff. But my identity (and friendships) are formed through books, films, a love of ale, as well as music. I choose to hang out with people because I like them, and have found that as I get older, choice of place to meet up or go out is less dictated by the music playing or the particular scene, but by the cleanliness of the toilets and the ability to have a conversation.
