Devin Townsend Production Technique...

Postby spoon_of_grimbo » 2nd Sep 07, 01:36

I figured that, what with Devin being an ex-Wildheart and occasional collaborator, there'd be at least a few people on these boards who are fans of his music, more specifically Strapping Young Lad.

Apparently Devin produces all their stuff using a method of layering white noise or something like that. I seem to remember reading about it ages ago, before I became interested in music production (something which is now a big part of my life, as I'm studying Music Tech at Coventry Uni).

I've been trying to find articles about his production technique (as all I know at the minute are some vague details), but so far to no avail, so I was wondering if anyone could help me out here, either with some knowledge on his methods, or even just a link to an article?

For reference, the production I'm referring to is used heavily on the two SYL albums I own, which are Alien and City.

I'd really appreciate any help on this.

Thanks in advance...

Your best bet is probably just to email Devin himself - either he or his wife usually reply to strange requests!

If you go on his forums at HevyDevy you can get a reply off him, his wife or his fans that know his style... I think its lots of layers of Vocals and lots of keyboard layers...but I listen to the solo stuff more than SYL...Thinking about it, I know theres some stuff up on youtube about the recording of Alien, and a recent instructional video about his setup, there might be more stuff on youtube that can give little bits of info...
Ive wondered now that since Devin's semi retired to a life of production and solo releases what his production style would sound like with The Wildhearts or one of the side projects, evem if it was just for a song or two...I just cant imagine if it would work or not...

The bonus videos from Ziltoid are quite good, although they don't go into that much technicallly.

All I know is that he usually has tons of layers of keyboards and vocals, but other than that I am not much help.

Devin kicks so much ass.
