I think it's the shows' producers. Unless they have an in-house position specifically designated for the task, I think the producers who put the shows together also put together what music to use, probably with help from someone more in-the-know about music.

...or often some clueless twat who thinks that Snow Patrol and Coldplay songs add emotional weight to the dirge on offer

I'm not sure who decides, but I have a sneaking suspicion that someone at the BBC has good music taste after spotting the Wildhearts and Alabama 3 and the like being used.

Well I'll tell you summit incredible... bout six months ago was going thru a sleep deprivation period and had cbbc on about 7.30am...and on one of these real life task building kiddies programmes, when they'd completed thier mission, they played the theme from 'Midnight Cowboy'...I don't even mean the John Barry score, I mean the Faith No More version.

It's just mad to experience such a thing. Either these people are random as fuck or madly specific about what they want...

I remember watching Blue Peter a while ago, they were looking round some art gallery while Mr Brownstone played, then on a more religious themed piece they stuck Sweet Child over the top, think they must of had Appetite knocking about the post production suite.

Ooh, another Blue Peter one. Was watching it once and they had something on about kids with premature baldness, or some such thing, and had 'Perfect' by the Pumpkins on in the background.

Bit harsh, I thought.
