The Answer

Postby beerofthedark » 22nd May 06, 15:22

Saw them at the Barfly Camden last night - bloody amazing. Proper Rock with a strong 70s/Led Zep vibe, but definitely original and with their own sound. They were so tight you could have bounced pennies off of 'em.
There were two bands before them, Scare and The Sign (in that order I think, apologies if I got that wrong). Scare were a fairly run-of-the-mill punk band with another hyperactive frontman with no discernible talent/originality  - so boring. The bassist was good tho.
The Sign were much better, a proper metal rhythm section, allied incongrously to a hair metal singer/lead guitarist who looked a little like a younger Sebastian Bach without the complete arseholiness. Bizarrely the mix worked pretty well and they had some good songs, well put together and well played.
But The Answer blew them off the stage, actually they blew everyone I've seen this year off their respective stages (with the exception of GATSS who squeak home in the lead) - they really were that good. This is a band who have one EP out, with a single and album to come over the next month, but played with the assurance of a band with a dozen platinum albums under their belts. The singer's voice hovers somewhere around the meeting of Robert Plant, Steve Tyler and Rod Stewart (and I mean that as a good thing  ). The guitarist was incredible, even a blinding wah-wah solo didn't sound dated. Bassist and Drummer put up a thunderous rhythm between them, rock solid but grooving - I am in utter awe.
If you get a chance - see them. Simple as.

They're on the line-up for this year's Bulldog Bash, according to the Rock City website. I'll take your advice and have a listen to them before hand.

Saw them supporting Whitesnake on Monday night in Newcastle and was very impressed too. Is the album worth getting?

Most definitely. Rise is one of the greatest albums I've heard in a while - and I've been listening to a lot of brilliant new bands lately. Do yourself a favour, son and get that album now! v 8)

The Aswer

I Bought the album this weekend and it is exceptional. It does remind me a little of the Ray Gillen and Jake E Lee band from a few years ago called Badlands but that's no bad thing they only recorded 2 albums and I loved 'em both.

You really need to get their 3rd album "dusk" then. It was released after the sad loss of Ray Gillen. Jake E assembled it from work in progress demos and it rocks.

You might also want to check out Cry Of Love from the same era. Their guitarist Audley Freed was in the Crowes for a time.

hi,
yeh i loved the Cry of love album and saw them at donington and enjoyed them. I didn't realise there is a third Badlands album I'll have to go hunting. The band I'm mad about at the moment is the Drive By Truckers and would recommend "A Blessing And A Curse" their latest release but it is worth checking them out on a listening post or over the net first. If I like the vocals I tend to like the band and i know we're all different.
Cheers.

I know exactly what you mean. I hated anthrax till john bush came on board... probably a bad example on this forum!

It sounds to me like you have impeccable taste... well, similar to mine anyway.

Have you tried any izzy stradlin albums?

I have the first Izzy album with the ju ju hounds and thought it was excellent I think it had shuffle it all on and pressure drop but I never bought any more. I am always buying albums and I have too many already but I keep on buying more. A few years ago I saw Neil Young at Rock Am Ring in Germany and I wasn't really a fan at the time. I recognised absolutely nothing but I have never seen a guy so into his music which in turn pulled me into his music i went out and bought a few of his albums got into stills, nash and young and started buying their stuff as well. There is so much music out there past ,present and future that it's impossible to get everything that you want so sometimes we miss bands. I also love Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Sammy Hagar, Original Van Halen, Cooper Temple Clause and various others the list is endless.
Cheers.

here we go then, just to bring this whole thing full circle to the great man himself...
crosby, stills, nash and young take us to the byrds, which of course included the legend that is gram parsons. he sang with emmylou harris who in turn sang with another legend steve earle. he appeared on jason ringenbergs album as did the wildhearts.
pause for breathe!!
all worth checking out by the way,
cheers, reece
