FAO Nuno75 - your song

Postby Assmask » 19th Apr 08, 15:35

Nuno75, just clicked in your link to listen to your sing ITIC.

I like it a lot! Very nice. The music's class, and your singing reminds me a lot of a band I used to listen to called Bracket. I like the riffing in the middle as well.

Is it all yourself? If so, is that a drum program or is it real drums? If it's a program it's got a great sound, what did you use? I use PC Drummer which is very easy to use, but the samples leave me a little cold at times (although Cubase can be used to alter the sound).

Also, how did you record the guitar, and what did you to to it afterwards, I'd love to achieve such a clean sound. I currently use an Edirol UA25 USB interface with a Shure SM57 in one channel and a MXL condensor mic in the other and record straight into Cubase.

And, last question, what is the effect you are putting on your voice in the verse?

yeah i'm quite liking it too, although i think it sounds a little more like Guttermouth than Bracket, lyric and vocal-wise anyway. good shit!
IF THERE'S A SOUND YOU PLAY THAT DOESN'T FIT TODAY,
WHY NOT JUST PLAY THE BASTARD ANYWAY?!

Sorry, guys. I had no idea that it might be in my best interest to check this area once in a while.

Well, where do I start?

Yes, everything is me, except for the actual playing of drums. One bass-track, five guitar tracks, three vocal tracks and a drum track.

The drums are done on a program called Fruity Loops, loaded with a massive set of custom samples that I kinda-sorta lifted from another drum program called Drumkit From Hell. I could have just used DFH but I would have had to get used to the interface, so I just recorded all of hundreds of drums sounds, trimmed them up nice and neat and organized them into Fruity Loops, which is really just an elaborate step editor.

I program the drums, one pattern at a time, and then organize the patterns into the full song. Then I split the song into individual drums and export them to my mixing program, Adobe Audition, where I pan them all where I want them and adjust the volume and apply a little EQ here and there. Then I lay down the two basic guitar tracks. You don't have to know how to physically play drums, but you do have to know how drums are played... if that makes any sense.

The way I usually handle guitar tracks is I lay down the "rhythm" guitar, which is really two guitars and are the main guitars you hear... meant to be the two guitarists in the imaginary band. I pan these hard left and right opposite each other, and most of the time they're doing exactly the same thing.

Once I've got those down, I do the bass... it's pretty cut and dry, nothing special there.

Then I go back to guitar and record, usually two of what I call "ambient" guitar tracks... meant to mostly fill in the gaps, broaden things up a bit. These are usually very, very subtle and almost subliminal. These are usually panned 50% left and right.

Then I do whatever little lead guitar pieces, I might need, which I don't often actually need. In this particular song, the only lead guitar part is during the intro.

Then it's on to vocals... the process of recording those is pretty much exactly what you'd expect.... just hours of belting out the same thing over and over again until it's just right.

I use a Digitech GNX1 guitar effects processor for both the guitar and the bass. I don't use mics at all when recording guitars/bass, because the pedal has an amp-emulator system that allows me to plug it right into my soundcard and still get a pretty much perfect sound. For recording and casual playing around the house, I don't even use an amp anymore,

My soundcard is a Soundblaster Audigy.

I appreciate your interest in my music. I've fallen into a bit of a slump with writing and recording lately, and it's my belief that the interest and enthusiasm other people show in your work is the main fuel behid your being able to work.

OK that's all pretty clear. We do thinigs the same way in terms of going about it, ie get the drums down first, guitars, bass then vox etc. However our methods and tools are a bit different. I'm not a fan of Fruityloops, I like PC Drummer too much I think, If I upgrade to PC Drummer Pro I can add my own samples tho which I might consider.

OK I do have some questions.

YOu managed to get that guitar sound using only a pre-amp? With no Microphone and amp? That is amazing. Everytime I have tried that I have just had a tinny and overly trebly sound. The very best sound I have been able to get is using my microphones (the best sound is from New Song Playing which you can see my following the link in my autosig - that is the best sound I have been able to get using mics and it's not a patch on what you have done). Is that just because of the Pre Amp you are using? If so, there is one going on eBay right now that I will buy. However, is it just that? Do you have any other modulators running to get that sound? What recording program do you use? Cubase? Sonar? And do you add any post recording effects to the guitar and bass to get that sound?

I notice that the pre amp you are using is discontinued. Like I say I can get it from eBay but do you know if there are any more recent releases that might sound even better?

How does it feed into your card? 5mm jack? On my Edirol UA-25 I have a multi input jack, it can take guitar lead or mic lead, it also has it's own pre amp. I don't suppose you have any idea whether or not thatwould have a negative impact on your pre amp?

Sorry for the grilling, but if I can get the same sound as you just by changing my input - plus not having to bugger about with microphones, wires, amplifiers etc, that would be amazing for me.

What mic do you use for vox? And what was the effect you added?

I'm at work now so I can only speak briefly and occasionally.

There was a time when I would've sworn that mic'ing the amp is the only way to go, but now I'll never mic an amp again.

I know next to nothing about the tech end of this, but I'm positive it's the pedal that is responsible simply because I get the same clear and natural sound when I plug my headphones directly into it.

Get this pedal, for sure. The GNX2, 3, 4, etc, are even better though. The 1 is the basic model

More to follow.

Also, the only I do the guitar after recording is EQ.

:) After some pretty intensive looking at the options, and some even moe intensive impulsiveness, I've just ordered myself the GNX4.

It looks amazing. I'll let you know the results.

Congrats. You'll love it.

Now, as for vocals, I try to stay generally clean unless it's a specialty area, like the verses and bridge in thiss song. Compression is the only thing I always apply to all vocals. For the verses I used even more compression and distortion from Audition's built in Guitar Suite effects. For the bridge, it's a soup of FX. Distortion, flange, chorus.... but mainly backwards reverb.

My mic says Samson on the side. I don't kmow if that's good or bad.
