Fancy helping the Eureka Machines a bit?

Postby lob » 10th Oct 08, 18:06

The Guardian newspaper is looking to award a 'First Album' award and whilst their promo blurb mentions bands like the Courteeners and Duffy - I reckon that the EM's Do or Die is the best debut I have heard this year so if a few of us mention it to them by emailing on first.album@guardian.co.uk I reckon they could put it in the running.

Just a thought

Good idea that man. *tappety tappety tap*>>send<<

Did you see the nice things Rock Sound said about them? I went in Zavvi to buy a copy and came out with a DVD, an album and a hardback book. £38 later, I only had my bus fare left!
Next time I'm sticking to the co-op. Less temptations. (ooh look, half price cherry tomatoes...)

I know the person who writes the 'exposure' bit is different to the one who reviewed the album but there's a real lack of consistency going on in this issue!

All praise and workds like 'classic' 'gem' in the exposure, but if you missed that by skipping straight to the reviews (like me) you'd think they thought they were shit.

Funny thing is, the exposure bit reads exactly like I'd expect the review to, and the actual review looks more like a single review (as Everyone Loves You is about the only song I could possibly describe as shrill)

Thanks for pointing out the positive article, I'm not quite so disappointed in RS now

Just doing my bit for a band who, quite frankly, deserve every bit of recognition that gets thrown their way!

That is good news, I hope they make the final 10. According to this they are choosing them this week and the list will be published on Friday so fingers crossed.

There is also a glowing review of the album, and a flattering live review in the latest Bubblegum Slut fanzine (along with a Wildhearts feature and free CD). The album review pretty much proclaims them the saviours of rock and roll so that's what I mean by 'glowing'. Kerrang take heed.

In other news, I made it to number 9 in the King of Air Guitar game only to be beaten back down to 10 by someone called 'Jesus is your friend'. Tsk!

OOh good news indeed, they ought to win but at the very least they should get on the shortlist, especially when you see the utter shite that the Grauniad suggested 'readers' would have liked.

Vicky have you read that Bubblegum Slut thing and is it worth tracking down a copy? Also do you (or anyone else for that matter) know what the Loyalties track is on the CD?

Yes I have it here. The Wildhearts article is a double page spread, written before the Earth Vs gig looking back at the time the album came out with added insight from Ginger. The CD has 18 tracks including Soho by the Loyalties. There's a Loyalties/Eureka Machines/Sorry & the Sinatras live review from the gig in Islington, a bit of Hot Leg, loads of CD reviews inc. Backyard Babies, Goldblade, Motley Crue, Alice Cooper.... there's tons in there, basically.

Sadly, the Guardian have decided to support such unknown acts as Glasvegas, Duffy, The Courteeners and the Ting Tings, most of whom were mentioned in the article where they suggested this whole thing in the first place.

Way to go out on a limb there. One wonders if the winner will be Glasvegas, Duffy or the Ting Tings. Oh the suspense is killing me.

Nevermind, at least we know they're ace.

Of those, the Glasvegas album is pretty good although it's bloody depressing.

Booooo (and hisssss)
I voted in good faith - and they had 'rules' which i thought would serve the more 'independant' of indie/DIY bands - and i don't normally stick my oar in where its a 'vote for a band' thing -'coz those things usually suck donkeys - and it's a case of whoever holds their hand up for longest will get noticed - talented or not. - but the EM album is a bit good so I wanted to give 'em a vote.

so now they're awarding a best debut to bands that loads of people have heard of and have been 'discovered' for a good few years.

shame - will have to wait and see who wins it. I thought they'd be looking for real underground bands.
In other news - did you know that, with the whole 'Ross/Brand' fiasco, and him (Ross) not being on the TV this weekend, 'The Killers' record company are 70k out of pocket 'coz the scheduled performance on the show had to be shelved.
talk about pay to play. !!!

Hopefully EM will get a mention somewhere in the proceedings

Did I just rant about the music industry/journalism/awards ?

...join me next week for the next instalment of 'State The Fucking Obvious'
