i enjoyed metallica tonight, they were pretty good even if i didn't really know any of the tunes. and they dropped big black beach balls on the crowd towards the end. great fun.
Control, we have a code 5. He is small, orange and has a broken fin. Yes, he's a fish.

I thought they were pretty good.. can always moan about song choice - no SANITARIUM ?!!?!?! - actually better than on the last couple of tours. Plus Lars' drumming was pretty decent... which makes a change...

Did not see Verity Sharp, sadly

anyone else noticed the dirt-poor mixing/mastering job on this album? the drums are way too loud, way too dry (not even the slightest amount of reverb one them), and both the drums and some of the guitars are even clipping (distorting) badly. its the whole "loudness wars" thing taken to a ridiculous level. i mean, i like the songs, but this really spoils it for me.
IF THERE'S A SOUND YOU PLAY THAT DOESN'T FIT TODAY,
WHY NOT JUST PLAY THE BASTARD ANYWAY?!

That's Rick Rubin. He has a thing for giving artists a back-to-basics sound by stripping off all of the tricks of the trade... reverb and shit. He uses clipping to that same end. Listen to Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt". The song builds in volume throughout and by the end it's clipping all over the place. It gives the impression that it's just too big to fit in your CD player or something.

It doesn't really bother me so much, but I think he could get the same effect in different ways.

Metallica definitely has the "riff" back.

The obvious similarity to Vanilla Radio aside, at a lot of times I think the new Metallica songs sound a lot like Wildhearts songs when they're just riffing about. It goes back to the old thread I started last year about why The Wildhearts have been unable to dethrone Metallica as my favourite band - because my favourite part of the Wildhearts is the riffs, and Metallica (from an overall catalog standpoint, that is) is better than the Wildhearts at what the Wildhearts do best.

I think the recent hate for Metallica is unwarranted. Reload, St. Anger, and Death Magnetic are only bad based on the standard that Metallica set when they were revolutionizing music... and who expects them to do that for a second time anyway? What they've done in the past 12 years is still some of the best mainstream heavy music the world has seen.

I think Death Magnetic is a really good album.
One of Metallicas best in fact.

However St Anger is a pile of pish.I can't even listen to it as i think it's so bad and to me it sounds like a band playing in a biscuit tin.
Same goes with Reload although it's nowhere near as bad as St Anger and the sound is way better.
Load has some really good songs on it but it's got a few duffers as well. However the good songs on it are really good.

MASTERED BY MUPPETS

End of session day, Rubin works away:
I'm your source of song-destruction
Tunes that hurt your ear, poor sound engineer
Leaving spikes on my instruction
Trust me you will see
Volume's all you need
Dedicated to
How I'll limit you

Compressing faster
Limit your Master
Your album sells faster
With a loud Master
Master

Mastered by muppets, brickwalling your dreams
Clipping, distorting and smashing extremes
Ruined by me, you can't hear a thing…
Just peaking snares, and auto-tuned screams
Mastered
Mastered
Rubin's my name, and I'll hear you scream
Bastard

Bastard

Need to mix this way, never you dismay
"Loud" makes death magnetic clearer
Gain monopoly, ritual Waves L3
Squash your tracks 'til it's severe
Gate and you will see
More and more dB
Dedicated to
How I'm killing you

Compressing faster
Limit your Master
Your album sells faster
With a loud Master
Master

Mastered by muppets, brickwalling your dreams
Clipping, distorting and smashing extremes
Ruined by me, you can't hear a thing…
Just peaking snares, and auto-tuned screams
Mastered
Mastered
Rubin's my name, and I'll hear you scream
Bastard

Bastard

Master, Master, where's the version I've been after?
Bearded, Bastard, you promised only lies
Blaster, Blaster, recorded on a ghetto blaster?
Laughter, laughter, laughing at those highs
Peak to me!

Lars ain't worth all that – "natural" kick and hats
Kirk adds wah without a reason
Never ending phrase, Jaymz goes on for days
Rob, your shirt is out of season…
I'll record 'til 5 (then)
I will help you buy
Sandals that suit you
Now you look cool too

Compressing faster
Limit your Master
Your album sells faster
With a loud Master
Master

Mastered by muppets, brickwalling your dreams
Clipping, distorting and smashing extremes
Ruined by me, you can't hear a thing…
Just peaking snares, and auto-tuned screams
Mastered
