Drummers - more advice please

Postby Col » 3rd Nov 08, 19:05

My 12 year old sauce pan lid has been doing drummin lessons at school for 6 months +

Buying him a kit is out of the question but also set up like Mrs Assmask in other thread is a no no.Waddya make of this type of thing for a xmas pressie.

Would this kind of thing be a total waste of time or could it do a job to get some rythm going at least?

If he's been playing at school for 6 months, I'd have thought he'd have established at least basic rhythm, so I don't know whether it might be disruptive to change the kind of kit he plays. I know I used to find it a nightmare swapping from lessons on a full size keyboard onto one of those mini-key things when I practiced at home.

I had a mooch around for some reviews, and they seem to be very mixed, although the models I've played in the past weren't great and were more along the lines of toys than 'proper' instruments. If you're looking seriously though, I'd definitely say find it in a shop (preferably a drum/music shop - if those places don't stock it, there's probably a reason) somewhere and play it first.

Can I ask why the other kind of kits are out?

If you could stretch the extra tonne then this would be a lot better:

Am sure better prices than that would be forthcoming, example eBay.

As Ean said, playing with the much smaller kit would possibly be counter productive for the learning.

That's exactly the one I was going to suggest too.

Or this one, which has way better pads for an extra 20 quid.

Cheers for replies.

Basically we have a pretty small 2 bedroom house that is full to the max (got 2 kids). Space is a massive issue, even with a decent size conservatory.

Ah, fair enough then, it might have to be that sort.

Electronic kits don't take up that much room though, and fold up pretty small - dismantled, probably no bigger than a largish sports bag, and definitely flat enough to slide under a bed.

If it was only the noise you were bothered about, you can do wonders with some tea towels and a roll of duct tape. :D

To fit in our house it would have to stay dismantled under the bed!!!

ive got this kit,
its really good, theres some good settings on it to create your own sounds etc

my only advise about it is.....play it downstairs, because if you play it upstairs (like i do) the bass pedal makes a MASSiVE banging noise that your neighbors get a bit pissed about

It's not really any smaller than the other electric kits, and it needs to be within a USB cable's length of your computer to use it (it runs on USB 1.1, so that's 3 metres).

Yep, it is, and while I'm sure cheaper is better for Col's wallet, he seemed mostly concerned with a lack of space in the house.

Those kits are godawful. I had one a year or two back. You could only use it if you had a specific app loaded on the PC, the feedback from the pads was like hitting a plank of wood, and the triggers were just terrible.

They may have moved on I guess, and I suppose the kid could learn coordination from it.

But god, it sucked.
