8) I found this via Gingers myspace page & wondered about other peoples views?

Ginger - 02 Academy 2 Newcastle - 11/5/09
During the years that influential North East rockers, The Wildhearts were on hiatus, singer/songwriter/guitarist Ginger would often tour the country playing acoustic shows. These gigs would actually consist of the man himself, a second guitarist and a bassist (all playing electric instruments, not acoustics) bashing out songs from the majority of his various side projects, including Silver Ginger 5, and The Wildhearts to rooms full of adoring fans. I was at one of these gigs three years ago and it was a legendary show, as every person in the room sang back the words to songs that connect with people and hold a special place in the heart of North East music.

Fast forward to now however, and in the exact same venue, things could hardly be more different. For some ungodly reason the PA system at the Academy 2 is so decrepit as to be falling apart. Even though the sound girl battles valiantly with the equipment, the bass and drums still end up drowning the guitars out before the technological leprosy spreads to the onstage monitors, leaving the band unable to hear what they’re playing or whether they’re in key. Eventually, Ginger has to resort to playing several songs kneeling on the floor in an attempt to hear anything at all.

These problems clearly take their toll on the band’s good humour, with only the crowd’s reactions keeping them going. In this respect however, Ginger pisses on his own bonfire. Instead of the mixed setlists of old, he’s decided to play songs exclusively from his three solo albums. Each album has some fine tracks and a majority of them get an enthusiastic airing, such as “this is only a problem”, “yeah, yeah, yeah” , “black windows” and “why can’t you just be normal all the time”. For someone with as many stone-cold classic songs as Ginger though, to restrict the gig in this way just seems daft. It’s understandable that now the ‘Hearts are back together he may not want to play the songs he performs on every other tour, but when you’re playing a homecoming gig and don’t throw in at least “Geordie in wonderland” or “29x the pain”, an air of self-indulgence starts to creep in.

The show is largely rescued in the encore, with the band returning to the stage with a greater energy before launching into Silver Ginger 5 favourite “Church of the broken hearted” and ending with “sonic shake” from the same album. The energy on the floor and on the stage increases dramatically during these songs, as it did with several from the main set, but ultimately leaves you pondering just how good the gig could have potentially been, even with the sound problems.

No, that review's just daft - it was always billed as a tour of solo material, not WH songs. There weren't just songs from 3 solo albums, there was also stuff from the SG5 album, 'covers' of Howling Willie, plus new material.

It sounds like someone didn't read the small print - the tour was billed as solo material, not WH acoustic and it did what it said on the tin. This reviewer wanted a re-run of a gig they'd been to before but that wasn't what was on offer so because they didn't like the set list they're now complaining? ah, whatever.

Ginger said that chucking in WH stuff wasn't plausible due to time constraints with rehearsing with the new band didn't he? Research and logic motherfucker! Apart from that, it's a sympathetic review.

seems a pretty fair review to me. positive even, after some of this boards comments about the same gig. yes, those who read this message board etc knew that ginger had ruled out wh tunes - but to the general punter? its not unreasonable to expect them, particularly, as the guy says, he'd seen past solo shows in the same venue.
he didn't seem bitter, just disappointed

At the Glasgow gig Ginger was incredibly happy that people were shouting out songs for solo stuff, i don't think anybody shouted for any WH stuff at all. Although after the first two songs Ginger did state that there would be no WH songs at all, so maybe that was why.

It does suprise me a little that there are Wildhearts fans who don't have Ginger's solo albums and aren't familiar with that material.

I love 29 X The Pain, but I think it has no place on this tour, there is such a thing as overkil.

why would it surprise you?

for example, i have some of motley crue's albums but i don't have any vince neil cds or sixx am or methods of mayhem. not everybody who goes to a gig is a hardcore fan and even amongst those there will be some who don't like all the material. some people like the lighter stuff, some the heavy etc.

i have all g's solo albums but i am nowhere near as familiar with them as i am with wildhearts material, much as i like them.

Yeah you're right, I perhaps incorrectly think most Wildhearts fans are 'hardcore' and with there being not that much activity on the WIldhearts front at times that the solo stuff would be sought after.

I would have expected more of the people at these solo shows to have the solo albums though, but I noticed qutie a few people staring blankly at the stage. The other reason it suprises me a bit is that if you like The Wildhearts then you are more than likely going to like Ginger's solo material.

But at least people who aren't familiar with the material still come to a solo gig and hopefully it will lead to them buying the solo records.

when i go to a Ginger gig I dont want any Wildhearts songs. I want Ginger songs.

in my opnion the last 3 ginger solo albums are far better than the last 2 Wildhearts albums. I still love the 'hearts but I love the fact the solo stuff is much different.

8) Ginger has so many sides to his personality I think The Wildhearts are too intense especially in a live setting, or maybe restricting even; a lot of Ginger's solos stuff is piano based with string arrangements, that The Wildhearts simply don't allow it.

I class myself a Wildhearts fan & Ginger fan the lines do blur at times but 3 solo albums in there is now a definitive difference between both camps so they can both exist happily alongside each other.

It's all about the opinions the post above says the last few solo albums were better than the last two Wildhearts albums, I disagree The Wildhearts seft titled being on par with Earth vs ... each to their own

I'm not sure any WH album is as good as Valor del Corazon...

And another SG5 album/ tour is right at the top of my WH/Ginger related wish list.

But anyway, I agree with EMMO - when I go to a Ginger gig, I want Ginger songs, and when I go to a WH gig I want WH songs, and so on...

Amen

On the drive home my other half asked me which I prefered, Ginger or The Wildhearts. I couldn't answer her because they aren't that comparable in my opinion. It like saying "what's better, cheese or carpets"? Well, I like them both. But they fulfill completely different objectives. One fills my tummy, the other keeps my feet warm. The Wildhearts are for when I want to RAWK!!11!! \m/ and Ginger is for when I'm feeling more reflective, but in too good a mood to listen to Husker Du.

ive always found it annoying when you go to a gig and a band member does a song from his solo album. 99% of the crowd are not there for solo stuff.
If they want solo stuff they will go to the solo shows.

In regards to the last Wildhearts album I like it but don’t love it. Its Ok and in my opinion its nowhere near the heights of Earth, Phuq, fishing or endless.

That said I love gingers solo stuff and I like the slower songs but I don’t like it when the Wildhearts go slow.
Bad time, Sky chaser high are 2 of my worst ever Wildhearts songs. I think acoustic / slower stuff doesn’t suit the wildhearts. I want 12 up-tempo songs from them on an album but when I put on Gingers stuff I know it will be different and that’s what I like about it.
