I think you're all kinda missing the point here.

I isn't a great example of the phenomenon but this is a common hip hip thing - samples & interpolation. My current favourite rapper Charles Hamilton is a key example of this - he isn't yet signed to a record label & so puts out music via the mixtape (as I suspect MC Lars has done here, unless Therapy?'s label signed over the sample), & many of Hamilton's mixtape's are built on samples. For example...

In short, there's nowt wrong with sampling any type of music as long as you do a good job of it. MC Lars didn't but that doesn't make it sacrilege, just a bit of a rubbish tune. And FAO Wildsam - its not like Ginger doesn't do his own version of 'sampling' when he chucks in musical references - a riff here, a lyric there - he just does it well...

To paraphrase hip-hop parlance, hate the player, not the game...

True. It reminded me of that fuck-awful Bloodhound Gang song 'The Bad Touch'. I reckon a good rapper (ie. not MC Lars) - someone like Kano, Dizzee Rascal or Akala could do a great tune with that sample. Basically, the secret to a good rap-metal song is getting both parts of the equation right. A great riff/sample is no good without an able rapper to provide the rhymes. Otherwise you get Limp Bizkit. Only their riffs weren't much cop either.

And I'm fucked if I can work out where Brett Anderson comes into it...

Def agree that sampling can work, but MC Lars' attempt is poor at best.

A great example of sampling and mash-ups at their best is the Dangermouse's Grey Album - a mix between Jay-Z and The Beatles and Too Many DJs.

I'm suprised someone has sampled the main riff of Pissjoy over some beats - now there's a club anthem in the making...

for riffs and raps combos there was a good soundtrack album years back "Judgement night". had proper decent bands working with proper decent rappers
