Which album would convince someone Ginger is a genius?

Albums, singles, songs and general Ginger banter

I think Valor's your best bet. There's a little of everything there, as well as some smoking riffs, and the songwriting is better.

But personally I'd be inclined to really diversify it and get a couple songs from each of his major releases on there. How can a Ginger retrospective be complete without Weekend? 29X? Sonic Shake? Church Of the Broken Hearted? It's All Up To Me?

Yoni was the first album I was introduced to, and wow - it sold it for me!

I'd only actually heard Jake and read the lyrics to the other songs on there before my own copy fell through the door curtousey of the nice Amazonians.

I was in - hook, line and sinker.

I've never grown tired of any Ginger album, and doubt I ever will. In fact, I often find something new to love on a "fresh" listen though. It's funny how many of his lyrics have been inextricably woven in to my day-to-day life, to the extent I find myself thinking, or even saying, the odd line without even realising it in reaction to a feeling or situation, sometimes fostering a sense of empathy and making me smile on even the shittest of days and sometimes associating songs to times in my life before I'd even heard the songs!

Oh well, after all that he says "I liked the first song (Casino Bay) but after that the rest all sounded like noise...is this what they call grunge?, it was like there were too much happening on the songs."

Sounds like he dismissed it after 1 listen which is a shame. Order him to play it more times!

Ah well...some people take a few artists very seriously and churlishly dismiss almost everything else.

We've all met them (hell, some of us here probably are them), they include folk who take a petty, self-satisfied, over-serious, under-appreciative stance against most sound cos they don't actually have as flexible or sophisticated an ear as they think they have, want to use musical taste as leverage in a vapid game of one-upmanship, or just don't actually like music as much as they think they do...

...not saying that's necessarily this guy, just puts me in mind of a lot of people I've met, not just those who don't get Ginger.

Bit late now, but before having anyone listen to the solo albums, Valor especially, I'd MAKE them read the whole 'Ginger says' article about Valor and the events surrounding it. If they don't think the songs are great when he can relate one to the other then he's clearly a lost cause
