Motorhead....metal?

Postby Keith Richard » 15th Aug 06, 00:55

Since I know there are many Motorhead fans here, I wanted your opinions......do you consider Motorhead to be a metal band or a rock n roll band? I have always considered the likes of Priest, Maiden, Sabbath to be "metal", I've never considered Motorhead to be "metal" but that's just my opinion. I am in the midst of a debate in another forum, but decided to ask the experts here cuz I know you'll be right!!

Cheers, Keith.

I always thought that if Chuck Berry started up a metal band it would sound like Motorhead.

hmm id probably class them as a metal band. looking at the past few albums which are really heavy. and they are said to be one of the loudest bands ever.

cant wait for the new album :p

I have often heard the term "speedmetal" used. Ace of Spades seems to fit under this classification, as does Suckerpunch. Overall I personally see Motorhead a Metal Band.

I would not however call Van Halen or Poison or even Def Leppard Metal, but others do. Preist and Maiden sort of founded Metal. How about AC/DC? This is a very good topic Keith.

Ah, the metal vs rock debate. you realise this can run and run, don't you? I've always though of Motorhead as Metal, but more because of the distortion, heaviness thing rather than actual types of song/lyrics etc. Listen to the thrash bands and you'll hear Motorhead stamped all over them, they took their lead from Lemmy and Co without a doubt. That being said, Lemmy has always said he thinks Motorhead were more punk or Rock n Roll - and i wouldn't want to argue with him!

As Lemmy always says when he walks on stage:

"We are Motorehead. And we play rock n roll!"

Does that answer your question?

One of my mates can't stand metal, is partial to only a tiny bit of rock and hates punk.

I have to laugh every time he calls Lemmy 'That talentless bastard', whenever I wear a Motorhead t shirt when we're out.

Fact of the matter is, I bet he'd like to be a pound behing Lemmy, had the women he's had and seen as much of the world as him, as for being talentless, hmm, well, the music business seems to sort them out quite easily, and yeah, OK, some do slip the net, but for the most part, those that have no talent, don't make it, so you can't say that 30 odd years in the business is talentless.

I would put them under "Speed Metal, "Biker Metal" (Even though Lemmy can't ride a bike lol) and probably Calssic Rock or something like that.

Cheers for the inputs. Some interesting points of view. Having just read the blurb about Kiss Of Death on the 'Heads website, everything seems to play up "rock n roll". There's very little, if any at all, reference to "metal". At my age, I guess it's just surmantics anyway, but I'd have been well into such a debate 20 odd years ago.

Motorhead are in a class of their own (as I consider the Wildhearts to be)....legendary......it seems so futile to try and pidgeonhole.
