Ginger/GDWs in Kerrang

Postby Nickinvincible » 17th Jan 07, 19:06

For info, the new issue of Kerrang! has as the main review feature a double review of Howling Willie and the God Damn Whores, as some sort of Ginger double-header. Broadly, they say HW is shit but GDWs is alright - they are quite complimentary about Ginger generally towards the end though.

and its got a wicked promo pic of GDWs looking very cool indeed I thought.

Only browsed in Smiths so I don't have a copy to scan, sorry!

Yeah, 2 K's for Howling Willie and even a bash at Clam Abuse while he was at it. Im a fan of both but there we go. 3'ks for GDH's.
Good picture of Ginger in the gigs section too, badly worded description below though makes it sound like the current tour is one of the first things he's done since the end of the Wildhearts in the 90's...at least thats how i read it.

What do they day about RJP?...after all, GDW is his project, not Ginger's. I'm amazed / disappointed that they only consider Lucky 13 worthy of 3Ks. S'pose that's why I let my subscription lapse several years ago.

The reviewer seems to think its more a collaboration, "oddball ordered chaos of the Cardiacs and the glammy, balls out rock of Ginger's many previous projects"...um...he said In The Army Baby sounded like Honeycrack (Not sure I see the similarity myself)...not much mention of Jon, mentions Ginger again in the closing paragraph "the proverbial game of two halves. But would we expect anything else from a band featuring a flawed but durable flame-haired Geordie who still knocks out more albums per year than most bands in a career"...maybe a better press release needed with the album to clear up that its all Jon...

I was surprised by the shoddy journalism in the review piece.

Ginger is not on the album according to the booklet as it says - written and performed by Jon Poole.

Also there was no caption box on the review piece, so people unfamiliar with the band would have no clue who was who.

Kerrang! are pissing me off of late, just when I thought they were turning it around.

I mean was a five or six page retro piece on My Chemical Romance entirely neccesary? And they are still reviewing gigs that happened back in December, but we are in the middle of Jan. Add to that they don't do news anymore. (Usually two small pages of stuff that is well out of date by the time they come to print.....)

My other complaint would be with Howling Willie review, mainly that he seems to think that Its all entirely aimed to offend, and that if it doesnt offend you then just you get a boring listen...maybe missing that for the people it isnt offending its giving many of them a good chuckle...maybe Im just a bias Wolrd O' Filth fan though.
Anyone else from South Wales fancy bashing the review a bit?

I think (maybe in error) that Ginger is the one who whispers "2, 3, 4" towards the end of "Wear Your Medal......". Sounds awfully like him to me.
