Yoni, Yoni, Yoni. - Your Thoughts and Musings... (spoilers)

Albums, singles, songs and general Ginger banter

Yoni's been doing a fine job in nursing me through a real beatch of a head cold. The chorus of "When She Comes" is well and truly burned into my brain's hard drive. He's certainly raised the bar a good few notches once again. Easier on the ears than Valor, and less of a rocker. It has something that'll please everyone. Definately a "grower". Too bad I'm missing the tour....this stuff will be awesome played live.

Album of the year so far and only likely to have that mantle removed perhaps in March or April!

Mine arrived via HMV Japan yesterday.
I really like it, and agree with others that its a 'grower'.
Lighter than I expected but still has the original wit of the Big Man.
Actually, I thinks it shows even more of his talent as a song writer.

The man is a fucking genius. Still.

Just a third of the way through the first listen here, but I had to post to say what a cool psych-pop song 'Smile in Denial' is - it's started like The New Pornographers and gone all Queen in the middle (with a touch of Cardiacs)!

Hope Ginge puts this album on eMusic fairly soon (so far only the Howling Willie Cunt album's shown up there), 'cos I've got a feeling it'll go down well with a bunch of the message board regulars who wouldn't necessarily be into the Wildhearts.

I got a copy from HMV in Liverpool today. After 2 listens I have to say I am VERY impressed. The musicianship is amazing (Tim Smith and Random make some creative and virtuouso contributions) and I think the production is a lot more satisfying than Valor. Some great moments- 'Smile in Denial' & 'Can't drink you pretty' have stood out so far (the latter sounding a bit like 'Same old song and dance' by Aerosmith!). Also, contrary to what someone else said, this has given me the instant hit that I didn't get from Valor.

I thought you meant this board!

Still, I'm very indie and I love The Wildhearts!

Not trying to be an ignorant twat here, but having listened to the preview and heard the whole of 'Black Windows', 'Jake' and 'The Night I Was Born Again', the record sounds like it was produced to sound almost wilfully, well...cheesy. :?

I know I haven't heard the whole thing, nor had time to digest it. I actually prefer it when Ginger's songs are treated with a warmer, more layered instrumentation than found on a lot of Wildhearts stuff, like in SG5. I found Valor to be my 'perfect' Ginger album in this regard.

However, some of this current stuff sounds pretty OOOOTT at the moment. But maybe that's the point, or something.

Thoughts?

Well I've been listening to Yoni for the past few days now, and i'm hearing new bits/lyrics on every listen - it's definitely getting better as time goes on. Not that I'm saying I didn't think much of it on first listen, cos I did...just saying it's firmly embedding itself into my musical consciousness :)

I seem to remember a while ago Ginger saying something along the lines of he'd love to do an album or recording with a full orchestra, and it seems to me that Yoni has got another step closer to this. Valor Del Corazon had the extra elements to it with the extra percussion sections and more backing vocals, etc, and I think Yoni has gone a step further with the inclusion of strings and brass sections, added to the extra time that has been spent in arranging it all (think I read Tim Smith was involved in this capacity).

It seems that Ginger is getting closer to this goal, and I can't wait to see what comes next.
I can't wait for the Junktion 7 gig tonight to hear some of this stuff live, but part of me would also love NOT to see him playing the smaller clubs, but rather much bigger concert halls where he could get the full "orchestra" together and make it sound like it sounds on the album, and how I think it should sound live.

Just my thoughts anyway - in short, love the new album :)

Yoni my thoughts

Postby BGennard » 19th Jan 07, 14:13

The new Ginger album Yoni, is out on Monday, the follow up to last years excellent Valor Del Corazon so how does it sound?

Well its a 12 track album, the Track listing being:

1. Black Windows
2. When She Comes
3. Holiday
4. This Bed Is On Fire
5. Smile In Denial
6. Jake
7. The Night I Was Born Again
8. Why Can't You Be Normal All The Time
9. Can't Drink You Pretty
10. Save Me
11. Wendy You're Killing Me
12. Siberian Angel

Well what can I can, the productions fantastic, the songs are as varied as anything we've come to expect from Ginger and the quality is excellent.

opening track Black Windows has been up on his my space page for quite a while now, defiantly a different song for ginger, but it has his trade mark hooks and Melody's (both vocal and Guitar) all over it, excellent starter!

When she comes is a poppy rocker, excellent song that's all i can say!

Holiday, very cheery song, reminds me of something but i cant quite put my finger on it, good song but not a particular favorite if I'm honest but that all down to personal taste.

This bed is on fire, is a straight ahead melodic rocker, gonna be a great track live, with some great trade mark tempo changes

Smile In denial, now this is a masterpiece! I love this song, and hey its so similar to something the mighty Willie Dowling might write its unbelievable! This song is one of the best things Gingers released in years!

Jake, the longest track on hear, with some more honest heartfelt lyrics from Ginger. An epic classic

The Night I was born again, a brilliant song and some of the best bass work Ive ever heard, you go Random!

Why cant you be normal all the time, is another excellent song,

Cant drink you pretty, is a fun song, a great rocker with horns and sax, great tempo changes i love it

Save me, a great power ballad

Wendy Your Killing Me, for some reason reminds me of classic Alice Cooper, great song,

Siberian Angel, has some one else on lead vocals but that takes nothing away from the song great album closer

So what are my thought, well this is an excellent album, falling somewhere in between Valor Del Corazon and the Break in the weather collection. A Masterpiece dare I say.

Now just looking forward to the CJ, Danny Wildheart And Sonic Circus releases, damn 2007 is gonna be a good year!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

You explained Yoni album perfectly. I agree with you on everything, the songs are so varied the orchestra parts sound amazing, drums and bass are brilliant, guitar riffs fab, I loved Valor but this is Gingers best yet in my opinion, he has certainly hit the nail on the head with Yoni in every way. love it....

when I listen to Wendy, You're Killing Me I feel like I'm listening to a Phil Collens record.

...I don't know why...but for some reason I'm cool with that.

It's a great record, but I hate the fact I had to download it, I'd much rather have a hard copy of the cd, but I fear it's never going to see a North American release.

Did anyone catch the riff from Red Dwarf in Smile in Denial?

That's a good spot. Hadn't noticed it.

Liking the album thus far.

The line on the song Jake about "not having a telephone" is incredibly poigniant.

Got my copy from cargo today 8)

Most moving thing about it I think is the fact that the album is dedicated to the memory of Trace
