I'm not sure I totally agree with that statement. The music I listen to still goes hand in hand with the way I dress, the people I choose to hang with and the places we go. Cause or effect? I'm not sure, but it sure beats defining myself by the dull job I do.

True, I still have some sort of identity based on the music I listen to. Hell the music I play, acoustic rock pop stuff. But my identity (and friendships) are formed through books, films, a love of ale, as well as music. I choose to hang out with people because I like them, and have found that as I get older, choice of place to meet up or go out is less dictated by the music playing or the particular scene, but by the cleanliness of the toilets and the ability to have a conversation.

Shit, you're right, I'm getting old!

Oh believe me I only hang out with people I actually like and I'm not saying I wouldn't / don't hang out with someone 'cause they have bad taste in music, I just naturally gravitate towards people who are into simaler stuff 'cause at the very least we have something in common I can relate to.

As for toliets...have you ever tried to take a dump on the Rescue Rooms (no locks)...

I think my tastes have mellowed slightly over the years, but more importantly i think they've broadened a lot, which is a bit different :)

Used to listen almost solely to heavy rock and metal (Wildies, therapy?, Rancid, nirvana, fnm through to Sepultura (old), deftones, biohazrad, Anthrax, white zombie etc.)

Atm I listen to a lot of singer songwriter stuff and classics (Neil Young, Warren Zevon, Jackson Browne, Tom Petty, Van Morrison etc) various hip-hop (Hhieroglyphics, Roots, Talib Kweli, Jurassic 5, Atmoshpere, Dilated peoples,) along with bits of jazz, punk, classic rock, some metal and still a fair bit of glam/sleave/pop rock, along the lines of Wildhearts, Gluecifer, Buckcherry, Tokyo Dragons etc.

Thing is, I still like bascially every album I have ever really like, I just don't listen to them as much now or enjoy other stuff. But I don't think I ever had bad music taste as such so most of my old heavier albums still get the occasional play :)

Ps....Girls Aloud......seriously, i'm a big GA fan but can't imagine ever bothering to listen to a whole album of theirs :S

Oops! But nah, I love the Rescue Rooms (well except when they have DJ's on playing bad remixes of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs - since when did playing a bog standard dance beat over someone else's music constitute "creativity"? Parasites!)

Can kinda see where you're coming from, you can close your eyes...

Think that's what's happened to me more than mellowing. I still like the likes of Bullet for my valentine (great live) and Trivium, but i haven't got that attitude where i wouldn't listen to it cos it doesn't fit me.

As to anyone who has a little rant about my current music tastes, i like to think of the line from Schizophonic "If there's a sound to play that doesn't fit today
Why not just play the bastard anyway?" be it cheesy or not.

Totally agree. Don't mind dance music but this doesn't do much for me.

Having had no tv when young, I was into music from an early age, basically before I was old enough to like 'proper' rock music, so pop was my first love. When I was a teenager I got into heavier stuff and was really negative towards anything without a guitar (and bland, indie stuff. Okay, that dilike remains to this day). As I got into my twenties, I became more comfortable with admitting that other music like pop did have a role in my life, and I just put it down to being older and more comfortable with myself.
However, this thread has made me question the role other people have to play in it all. As a teenager who loved heavy rock/metal and little else, I was at a school with people I hated, very few of whom liked rock music. I think I associated other music with them. And how many people who were bullied at school turned to rock music? My bad school experiences coincided with grunge, so obviously I was going to find more solace here than in some dumb music with little meaning in the lyrics.
A big enemy for me has always been bland music. Then, a few years ago, I was living with a girl who liked Dido and Coldplay. And she became a good friend. For the first time the thought then crossed my mind that maybe the people who make this music may even be pleasant people, with a lot going for them, the fact they like/make boring music doesn't make them valueless. So now I figure music is just music, whatever does it for an individual is okay by me. Except a lot of rap/rnb type stuff, which is often sexist, homophobic, glorifies violence and encourages the idolisation of superficial things, but even then I hate the message in the lyrics and images rather than the music.
Nowadays I like a range of stuff, but most things I listen too are based in good songs. The rock music I like (especially the Wildhearts) has always been based in good songs with catchy bits, which I guess makes it all pretty poppy. But these days I have so few friends into heavy rock music, I get into little that's new in this genre. So if anyone feels their tastes are a little narrow, maybe they should try mixing with a wider social circle.

Thing is, you can say 'Look at me, I'm musically open-minded, I listen to pop music', and that's fair enough. My music taste gets a bit silly at times.

But how many times do I get the piss taken out of me for admitting I like non-trendy bands like Linkin Park, Nickelback, etc. Eh? *mumble*

Personally I don't care if people think I'm narrow-minded. I have strong opinions about what I like and equally what I hate. Better than being sat on the fence!

lob wrote:Can't say I have mellowed particularly, I am 50 now and my musical interests have ebbed and flowed over the years. Sometimes singer/songwriters, sometimes guitar bands - jazz, blues, hip-hop classical, rockabilly, art-rock, post-rock hard-rock and all those other rocks - as long as it is a good tune/song. In fact I would say that I have got more interested in the grittier end of rock music over the last few years - God I shiver when I look back to the mid nineties when I actually went to the NEC and saw Clapton, thank goodness I have put away the cardigan and slippers and got out the old DM's again.

I didn't know/see the Wildhearts until my late forties (thank you daughters) and over the last year or so not only have i seen Ginger, the Wildhearts and the Cardiacs but also artists as different as The Fall, Max Romeo and Martha Wainright. It has got better as I don't have to worry any more, I know that I am older than most people at gigs and probably stand out but sod it, I am enjoying myself (except at Martha's gig the only one in my life I have walked out of, she was pissed and it was embarassing to watch).

Hats off to you sir...I though I was the dinosaur of the boards clocking in at 45. No way have I mellowed.....I've gone right off heavy metal, but essentially, it still needs to be loud, pounding and stylish for me. granted, I do enjoy acoustic stuff, but again, it needs a personality. You'll alway find me down on the front row. The only way I've mellowed is that I've toned down my motorcycle riding style.....life's too short and I dont want to miss any as a result of a stupid mistake.

At the end of the a good song is a good song no matter what age you are. My girlfriend loves the worst cheesy pop you could imagine and usually dislikes anything I put on. However there are occasions when she hears something of mine and likes it. I think Take That's past two singles have been POP gold and so far this year among the CD's I have bought this year are Mastodon , Ginger , Arcade Fire and Kaiser Cheifs.
I will say I went to see Fightstar and the automatic and felt so old (32) all that was missing was Coco and slippers. Maybe its just when I see new bands coming on the scene that both bands were good live I think to myself its not like the old days when I could mosh without my back breaking. Or It might be I don't want people thinking look at that old cunt
