Rating: - Anthem: A New Direction for the 'hearts
So Ginger thought that the 'hearts needed a bit of a kick up the backside in terms of heavyness. In the vein of the Hellacopters, the metalness of the album was increased exponentially by re-running it through the distortion equipment in postproduction. The effect is distorted singing and drums along with the guitars. But the real effect, once you're used to the scratchy, almost 'bad radio reception' quality of the record, is one of rock and roll madness. Anthem is the song of the decade, and on UK TV, even the trendies went loopy over the pounding riff. The other tracks, including I think a cover, are done in the same way. This is serious listening, but the distortion hides some gems of riffs and some classy lyrics. Not for Britney Spears lovers, but for rockpunkmetal...... everywhere. As the chorus in Anthem suggests:
