This is interesting, i loved the sonic circus gigs:

Planet Loud – How did the solo shows go?
The Wildhearts – They were alright but, to be honest with you I’m sick off playing to nobody. When I play with The Wildhearts it is invariable a full house but when I do my solo stuff it, well, isn’t. It’s not hard to work out why but it’s a bit soul-destroying because the band I’ve got is really good. When I do The Wildhearts people attend when I do something that isn’t the Wildhearts, people don’t really give a shit. It doesn’t change anything though, the band has a good time, the people have a good time and the money I make goes to paying some debts off which is nice.

I did too, but you can see what he means. When you've created something like the WH which, from the very start, has had some kind of magic about it, no matter how hard you try there's no way you're really ever going to eclipse it.

I'd imagine that Dave Grohl feels similarly sometimes - Foo Fighters are (IMO) a great band and they've achieved huge things, but one mention of the 'N' word and people start gazing wistfully into the ether.

Only the London SC gigs that I went to were sell outs - the wolvo gig was full, but not in any way packed. It's hard to start from scratch when you've done something already though.

I guess it's hard for any artist to do solo work because people always expect "the hits" from their main band.

It's hard to get the balance right as well because if you play too many of the hits then you're just living off the success of your day job, if you don't then people complain they don't know your songs..

Funnily enough though, there's one person who is now actually capable of pulling in bigger crowds for his more recent projects, than he would have gotten for the one that made him famous. It's pretty rare though.

On Friday night I saw a solo acoustic show from Mark Morriss out of The Bluetones. 50 or so people turned up to see him in the upstairs room at Bristol Academy, but a few months back the full band pulled 10 times that in the main room. Such is life...

I guess we'll never really know just how big Nirvana would have become...

Part of it is that he seperated himself by taking a completely different role in Foo Fighters.

And I can't imagine that there'd be a huge market for the 'Dave Grohl Drums The Hits Of Nirvana' solo tour though...
