To be honest, I don't really care where they chart anymore.
Maybe it’s cos I’m in my late-twenties now, and no longer feel the sneaking need to measure the validity of my own musical tastes by who else might be converted, or by how many I or others might convert. I love it…if the rest of the world are apparently a cadre of cloth-eared, cardigan-souled muppets, who cares? Maybe you’ve gotta be weird to pleasurably reconcile all of Ginger’s songwriting elements anyway…’Be inspired; a freak with pride.’
Our sources of musical consumption have become more fragmented and more democratised. It seems that Ginger will always have a healthy fanbase, and now we don't have to rely on midweek magazine middlemen in order to inform us of the movements/achievements of the band/artist. I think most people here now bypass that stuff as a primary source, and are merely interested in how those write-ups compare and contrast with their own opinions and the opinions of other fans; rather than treating them as something which might semi-crystallize their own or others’ perspectives or appraisals ahead of official release.
While positive coverage in K! or whatever might still help, it's no longer the primary channel through which people can access the music. It's all more diffuse. Influences spread more organically now, and people can access music they're not necessarily paying for.
To be honest (and perhaps a bit presumptuous), I don't really care if some 'casual' fans are downloading the music, but not currently paying for it. They may well be influenced by exposure to do so in the future. I will still pay, and I suspect that 90% of people bothering to read this will too. The hardcore mass will want to have hard copies of what's available…or to pay to download. I don't think Ginger's necessarily losing out in commercial terms. He's never going to eat the world now...he has a hardcore base of fans, and the natural creativity to generate enough material to keep him off his uppers, and to keep us fuckers hooked. He’s not a growth industry, but he has the consistency and the reliability to shield him from the vicissitudes of fashion.
Or maybe I’m talking shite, I dunno…just some thoughts.
Anyway, The Wildies have charted badly for 10 years now....what was 'Endless Nameless'? 41 for about a week, from what I remember. Has any of this really affected any of our enjoyment? We're a clique of freaks....so, like, fuck it.
