Album hard to get - is there a distribution problem?

Postby Robdj » 24th Apr 07, 20:21

Finally got hold of the new album after the problems of amazon saying they would send it out about 4-6 weeks late.

Then went into Nottingham.
Virgin Megastore - sold out
HMV - sold out

Course teh devoted fans like us will search hard and find it eventually (there were a couple of copies in fopp)
But surely it cant be good for sales if 1 day after release there are no copies in either of the main two shops. Lets face it most people browse those big shops and most people won't hunt all over town for it.
It needs to be available on the New release/ recommended rock shelves to get the masses to pick it up and notice it. Considering it got a decent size review in kerrang and was one of the main rock releases of the week it seems weird not to capitalise on that.

I was gonna put up a photo of HMV Newcastle: there really behind the album as they have about 6 copies of each WH album on shelfs along the wall of the metal section. Looks good.

At the HMV I work for in Stockton, we only got 3 copies of the album. I bought 1. There is now 1 left.

May be that the review have prompted loads of people to rush out and get a copy.

A swift word with Ginger at one of the gigs would be a good idea.

Each store probably only got a dozen copies, so that they had more room on the shelves for funeral for a friend, panic at the disco, my chemical romance and all that shite

Which is part of my question. Did enough copies go out? Because a lot of the fringe-fans are far more likely to buy it on the week it has been released and when the band has had some decent press coverage. It needs to there in the shops now, when demand will be at its highest.

Your right. Us WH fans will get it when ever we can, and in a few months someone whos toyed with the idea of getting into WH could buy it as a way to 'break in'. But the emo kids will only get it the week kerrang or whatever cover it.

I think the HMV I work at should of at least stocked 5 copies.

Got mine off Play - even arrived on day of release (nice one!)

Can't remember the last time I brought an album from a "real" shop. Gotta love the 'net!

Not many copies at all for a medium sized, well known band, on the week of the albums release. I read elsewhere someone in Dundee also found it hard to find a copy. I'm sure it shouldn't be hard to find a new album by a band that size the day after its release.

Funnily enough, I bought Dundee HMV's second-last copy last Wednesday before the official release.

Cargo came through for me yet again. The CD dropped through the mailbox morning of 24th....not too shabby a delivery performance at all me thinks.

Let's hope this is because it's selling a lot faster than anticipated.

If sales have anything to do with the quality of the music, then that's the cause.

But they aren't the least bit related, so.....

Aye I am still waiting for my copy (from Fading Ways) but I just bought it from iTunes cos I couldn't stand the wait. Anyone else who is impatient and can afford to waste 9 quid, I recommend that you do this. Honestly, for the price of three pints of beer, you can get the bestest album that anyone has done for ages several days before you otherwise would have got it.

Yeah I think distribution has been a problem. The last album even made a brief appearance at my local Asda, but no such joy when I checked yesterday. Good job I already have it.

Most people buy their cd's through Supermarkets apparently.
