GU Medicine

Postby Keith Richard » 24th May 07, 22:24

Well. since there's a thread dedicated to Sign, It's only fair to have one dedicated to the band who completely wiped the floor with 'em! Being isolated here in SF, it's a bit difficult to keep up with what's really going in the world of UK hard rock (the greatest hard rock movement bar none). During the recent tour, GU Medicine blew me away much in the same way that The Almighty did way back when they opened for........geez, I cant even remember who the headling act was...says a lot!

Picked up "Saints Of Excess" at the MK gig and haven't stopped playing it...fuggin awesome stuff. HUGE mix of Motorhead, Almighty, Cult. I love this stuff! This is REAL hard rock...who could argue with a track title such as "Mind Like A Motorbike"?

Come on.....we all need to get behind this band..fuck the 1980's wannabes.

GU...if you're checking this out, get the fuck over to West coast USA. We need this kind of destruction!

GU Medicine were a funny one.

Live, they were totally awesome.

On record, they are totally awesome.

However, I don't feel that the record reflects the live show or vice versa. The records - Saints... and GU... - are both very clean production wise, with polished music and very clear vocals.

Live I felt it was more of a sonic onslaught, muddy guitars, filthy bass and really raw vocals.

Not that I'm criticising, mind - they're an excellent band, but certainly not consistently represented in my opinion.

Certainly, certainly better than Sign.

Perhaps not the best of equipment, and perhaps it was being pushed too hard? Support acts rarely come across with a great sound...not that I'm suggesting that Ginger and co would deliberately "influence" the sound.

Could be the case - I'm not trying to say that the live sound was detrimental, I thought it was excellent, it just wasn't representative.

i thought the sound for gu and sign was much clearere at mk than it was at kokos. kokos was loud as fuck but the dificult to make out vocals. hence i enjoyed gu second time round when i could hear what they were singing. interesting that in the sign thread someone criticised the twin vocals on gu's last song -when elsewhere that song had been compared to the wildhearts themselves!
why do i have to ignore you to get your attention?

Yeah, I agree on that one. They have a different feel, somehow.

I bought 'GU Medicine', which I quite liked, but I don't find myself listening to it all that often. If I want stompy guitary stonerish rock then I tend to reach for the Kyuss or Monster Magnet.

Which is the better album - the self-titled, or Saints of Excess?

Knee jerk reaction is to say Saints. I really like the songs off the self titled, especially Find An Ending which was stunning live, but Saints is a little more complete I feel.

GU Medicine knocked me back £4 off their website though so lesser album or not it was a bargain.

Finally got the debut album last night, and what a blinder it is too. Anyone who enjoys Motorhead, The Almighty, and WH Suckerpunch, Sweetest Song, some EN, Nita Nitro etc should check out GU if you havent already. It's been a long long time since a band had this effect on me!!
