Why was a 2nd version of 29 X the Pain recorded?

Postby seventieslord » 10th Jul 07, 06:03

The two versions are vastly different. Forgive me for my ignorance, as this predates my Wildhearts fandom by 7 years. But, why is there a newer version on the UK Best-of?

I'm not sure why they re-recorded it, other than it's such a big song for them and maybe they just felt it deserved a rework to reflect changes in their general sound... but they also recorded a newer version of Weekend (five Long Days) around the same time. They both started out as bonus tracks on the Japanese release of Fishing For Luckies, along with Beautiful Me, Beautiful You and Caffeine Bomb.

I think that it was around late 95 early 96 when they finally got Jef in the band and started touring again. They were getting quite a lot of fan requests for 29 times (this is before it became iconic...) and Weekend, so they rerecorded them in 96 and released them on the vinyl version of the Fishing for Luckies (fish cover) release, along with Beautiful Me, Beautiful You and Johnny Wash n Go.

They subsequently appeared on other collections.

Also I believe the crowd singing on Weekend '96 was recorded at Leeds, perhaps at the sound city '96 gig (Ginger has also said it was recorded in Japan, but I think he previously said Leeds, and to be honest, the crowd sounds more English than Japanese to me...)

Cheers

Are the lyrics not also changed too?

"I'm gonna miss Kurt Cobain" to "So, where are you Richey James?"

I don't have the re-recorded version handy as all my records are in storage, so I couldn't check.

I can confirm that the crowd singing on Weekend was most definitely NOT recorded at the Sound City '96 gig in Leeds because they didn't play it at that show. That was my first proper gig (at the tender age of 14) and I specifically remember the absence of Weekend because me & my mate were shouting for it throughout the whole gig.

I got my mum to tape it off the radio for me so I've even got a partial record of the set (they played the gig in two parts, the first of which was broadcast) which is really cool. I also got the sets from CIV & Cecil which where amazing as well. My mum didn't get Feeder's opening set but judging from the response they got on the day, neither did the crowd so no great loss!

I'm off to look for the tape now! :D

Fair enough - more likely to have been the autumn '95 Leeds gig then. That would make more sense in the recording timescales too I think

But, yeah.. it's sweet that the rest of the band are still saving his royalties for him, though.

I think the whole thing's so sad. He obviously had a serious mental illness and looking at the facts (he was depressed, anorexic, had drug problems, problems of self-harm and left a car by a notorious suicide spot, which had all pictures of his family in the glovebox) it doesn't look good of him being found alive.

I keep thinking, why didn't he just say what he was going to do? It's so cruel for his mum Dad and sister to not know all these years. I mean, can you imagine getting older and having to live with that burden, never knowing whether you son/brother is alive or dead.

Love or hate the Manics, Richey's lyrics were unfuckingbeatable. In a dream world I'd have him doing the lyrics, Ginger writing the tunes and Rivers Cuomo doing vocals. (Dave Grohl on drums, Jon Poole on bass and me on er......... dustbins)

I actually like the 2nd version better.
It seems a lot tighter to me. I like the Ritchy line better (even though I cant stand MSP)!

I remember reading about five years ago that this girl (a die-hard Manics fan) was sure she saw Richey James on one of the Spanish islands. She said she observed him from a distance for a while and was convinced she could see the scarring on his arm (from the infamous "4 REAL" incident). Apparently, when she approached him he quickly left without saying a word. Of course, the whole tale could be BS, but I don't believe he's dead. Oh, and I think the second version of "29" is better. Tighter, and the backing vocals are great.
