What's the status on the WH back-catalogue?

Postby nuno75 » 12th Nov 07, 18:29

Anyone know how close Ginger and the guys are to owning the rights to their old music? It'd be nice to see that video-collection DVD finally get made... and also, I'd be interested in some Crucial Crue-style reissues.

I'd be surprised if the old label ever let them make any money from it, but whether they'll let them put stuff out is another matter. Mind you, if it all goes to pay old debts, I doubt they'd have much hunger for it.

This is nothing more than speculation on my part and may be spectacularly misinformed. And I certain hope we get a DVD collection eventually...

I think you're pretty much spot on there.

As far as I know, the only stuff they own is the Round Records releases. The TWMBD era independant stuff went to Gut as part of the album deal, and Mushroom and East/West own the rights to everything else, and as I'm pretty sure they're still owed money, I can't imagine them giving it back easily.

Probably best not to hold your breath really.

I'd like to think the guys, most notably Ginger, has enough love for his work that he'd want to go out of his way to get control of it, even if it costs him an arm and a leg to get it. I just can't imagine that all of that stuff, all the best stuff really, just floating around out there isn't eating him up every minute.

You're talking selling dozens of guitars on eBay to fund that kind of thing.

Might be worth keeping an eye and an ear open for it...

the chances of them selling the rights back at an affordable price are pretty slim, they'll hang onto them "just in case". there's more chance that someone will license the tracks for re-issues. you could go to east / west and they'd give you a price on a licence for reissues, they'd most likely put a limit on how many could be made but that would be the way round it. it's only really worth doing if ginger or someone close to the band gets involved so that the reissues could have proper sleevenotes, extra tracks and that kind of thing. if it was done without their involvement you'd be pretty much limited to what's already available.
