A Difference of Opinion

Postby Ilsa » 10th Apr 08, 23:15

Several months ago I was introduced to Ginger (Yoni specifically) by a good friend. The natural progression, (as some of you may have seen from my post in "Wildhearts Chat") was an interest in the Wildhearts. "Interest" puts it milldly. It's far too late, and I'm far too far down a bottle of wine to articulate how much I love Earth V's.......

However, Mr Ilsa does not approve of (and I quote) "What's this fucking shite?"

I'm standing my ground. Some might say, suffering for my art. Ahem. Some support please people!! Any similar experiences or advice to offer???

Whack other half round head with cushion and shout 'love me love my wildhearts'.
That's what I do. Can't promise it will work, like, but I do keep trying.

Mr P gives me the same reaction when I put the Wildhearts on. Yet he loves SG5, SS666, The Yoyos, God Damn Whores, Honeycrack, Eureka Machines, Backyard Babies etc. Sometimes I'm convinced he only claims he doesn't like the Wildhearts to wind me up. He does the same with Bowie come to think of it. It's most frustrating. I either have to bully him into coming to gigs with me or find someone else to go with. Usually I do the latter cos I want to go with someone else who appreciates it. And isn't a flippin' killjoy!

I guess we can't all be blessed with such good taste in music. Sometimes we just have to admit that our other halves are not quite perfect, but at least they have good taste in choosing us

The really annoying thing is, when he does come out everyone assumes that he's the fan and he's dragged me along. I remember Danny seeing him in the pub pre-gig once and giving him a nod. He'd figured that Mr P was the fan and I was just his girlfriend tagging along... *fume*

When I first discovered The Wildhearts (1991) I had been well steeped in music of many different genres (even though I was reasonably young), which I had been introduced to by either my parents, my brother or other musicians (I was a bit of a "with it" guy back then, belive it or not Homies 8) ).

My opinion on musical matters was generally accepted (if not agreed with), yet, whenever I attempted to explain the absolute genius of Ginger's songwriting abilities - bearing in mind this is before ANY solo output, incl. SG5 - I was met with blank stares and/or comments along the lines of, "They're trying to be Metallica/ Beatles/ (insert band here)...", or, "They're not as good as The Chilli Peppers/ Faith No More/ (again, insert band).

So after about 5 years of trying to convert or persuade everybody I knew who was into music that The Wildhearts were/are the best band that they've ever heard, I simply stopped trying and resigned myself to my quiet existence where I have supreme taste and all these Philistines who supposedly like good music, don't.

The plus-side of this existence is that when something new is released, we get to hear the reactions of REAL fans, and not just people who think they have to like an artist just because all their mates do.

Like that twat Pete Docherty.

Keep the faith!!!!

Just keep forcing them to listen to it, wildhearts songs are too catchy to resist for any prolonged period. My ex didn't like them but I did eventually manage to turn him enough to come and see them twice last year with me
Although he still says they're crap. (He didn't say that to Ginger though when we met him briefly last year lol  )

I have asked this council for similar advice. I am less than 4 months from marriage to a woman who is frightened by my adoration for the band. So now we just don't talk about them (one of just a couple of things we don't talk about). Damn shame though, as she likes rock music.

I am yet to meet a gal in Australia who loves them as much as i do. I know plenty of lovely girls in Japan who love them the way i do but that's not exactly across the road. Thankfully though, the fact no one knows them here is a good sign. I have a huge wildies tatt on my right arm and people always ask about it which then entails wildies related talk which then means they will suss it out and then we have more fans. Yay! I have met tons of males here though that love the Wildhearts. They're actually popular here in Melbourne... yet no one else in Australia knows who they are... unless they've met me.

Supersuckers next weekend.

So good!

I have to admit having met Ilsa's husband and being very drunk of Jack I tried to have a reasonable argument with him as to why he didn't like them. First he said they knicked the riff from Pink Panther :?: and then all he could say were they're unorignal and trying to rip off othe bands.

I'm lucky, it's actually my other half who introduced me to Wildhearts and I haven't looked back since. Although he always secretly thinks he's the bigger fan 'cos he has followed them since about '93, but I'd have Gingers baby and I don't think he'd go that far lol.

Ah yes, I'd forgotten about the Pink Panther "accusation". I'm not sure what to say, but suspect that red wine may have had something to do with that particular gem. Or perhaps he knows he's got so solid ground to build an argument on so is grabbing at straws via 80's kids cartoons?? From what I can recall Oleandershelly put forward a compelling and well thought out case, far better than I could have come up with after that much JD.

Well, it's good to know I'm not alone.

I've recently ordered PHUQ and Don't be happy... Just worry from Amazon, so there'll soon be more of "This fucking shite" for him to listen to. That should please him..... especially when he sees whose card I've used to pay for them.... 8)
