Just looked at HMV Japan and the Jap version of the album

and suddenly realised, I have not heard ANY of the original versions of these songs

I think this might end up being an interesting journey of discovery!!!

Anyone know which of the online music stores provide proper mp3 files you can listen to on a standard mp3 player (y'know unlike Itunes) and come as a decent quality? Not wanting to shell out for garbage compressed poor-quality Apple files or WMA files. Really wanting these songs when they get released online tomorrow but no idea where to get them from.

Cheers.

I think amazon has them at 256kps, which is excellent quality for an mp3.

from amazon:

Are there any restrictions on how I use the music I purchase?
When you make a purchase from the Amazon MP3 Music Downloads store, you are also accepting and bound by the Amazon MP3 Music Downloads Terms of Use. The albums and songs you purchase from AmazonMP3 Music Downloads are free of Digital Rights Management software so that you have the flexibility to play them on any of your media players, PC or burn them to CD.

Can I burn my MP3 files on a CD and listen to it on my CD player?
Yes. MP3 files downloaded from the Amazon MP3 store should be compatible with most CD burning software or CD and DVD players capable of reading MP3 audio files.

I expect The Wildhearts "Stop Us..." album to be available on iTunes Plus at 256k (constant bit rate) AAC (MP4) just like the self titled White Album. In theory, these constant bit rate files are slightly higher sound quality than amazon's 256k VBR (variable bit rate - more bits when needed / less where possible) MP3s. I seriously doubt it's an audible difference, but the actual file size should be a touch higher for the constant bit rate files.

One other thing to consider is that amazon's files are copied to iTunes from their own music folder, meaning if you use iTunes you'll have the file duplicated in two places on your computer instead of one. Unlike the old standard 128k iTunes files, iTunes Plus files have no DRM just like all of amazon's files.

If anyone knows if there's a site that will have the files available for download in the lossless FLAC file format, please post as I would much prefer that higher sound quality option.

Hope this info helps.

As an American, I'm curious to know exactly when this will be available. The preview tracks have been an exercise in frustration for me because I can only use the internet via my PDA while I'm at work. I checked the site every Monday morning before I left for work and found that the new preview hadn't been posted yet. Then at about 9:00 AM my time (EST), I get to see you guys here posting about how the new song's been posted and you've heard it and it's auditory bliss to the bottoms of your souls and I'm left waiting another 6-7 hours before I can get home and hear it myself.

I'm hoping that it will be different for the album release, particularly at the American versions of the on-line stores, where theoretically I should be able to grab it at midnight tonight and be able to hammer it into my head all day at work tomorrow.

Can non-Americans buy from Amazon? I thought they were only available to US users so far.

It's going to be on eMusic, I'm guessing? So... buy the £9.99 subscription then cancel it, and £9.99 you get 35 downloads plus the 50 bonus downloads for the signup. In other words, once you've got the Wildhearts album you've still got 74 downloads for the month... that's a lot of albums all for a tenner.

That way, getting the download now and the CD later doesn't seem so bad...

They don't do it quite like that any more. You only get 25 downloads for nothing when you sign up and two weeks to decide whether you want to stay subscribed or not, then they charge you after that. So you can sign up just to get the free tracks and then cancel straight away (you'll need a credit card number, and you can only do it once on each card).

The MySpace previews have been going up at around midday in the UK, but this is done by the guy who runs the Myspaz, when it comes to the release, you're very much subject to the whims of the individual stores and their new release update policies. :?

iTunes had the last album shortly after midnight if I recall correctly. :D

Oh, and yes MikeH, Amazon downloads are currently US only.

Emusic is the best bet in my opinion as they use the LAME mp3 encoder using the V2 preset (vbr), V0 would be nicer but nevermind, DRM free of course. LAME is known to be the best mp3 encoder, google it.

I'm not going to be buying the download, as I've spent £25 on the japanese import!

I'm not too fussed that I'll have to wait a bit, there's no way I'm paying another £7-8 on top just to get tracks earlier.

(also note that I've already had an emusic trial)
