To Sloppy? you're kidding me right? I dont think a band that are sloppy would have been able to pull off a song like Twiddly Dee and as for Candy From A Stranger and Silver Lining y'gotta remember that they're getting on a bit now and in their fourties so unless they're trying to be the Ramones they're not gonna sound how they sounded when they first came out the band is nearly thirty years old so of course they're gonna sound different.

Pretty damned good! Never let much Soul Asylum into my life, but if the original is as good as the cover..... :D

I don't think it is - and I'm a pretty big Soul Asylum fan. :?

I think it's a great version but I'm with Ean as I'm also a big Soul Asylum fan, I'm six foot one.

Are you sure you're with me? I think the WH version is way better than the original.

You're spot on about which albums to get though (I'd include ...And The Horse They Rode In On and Let Your Dim Light Shine too) - not least because they're the ones you've actually got a chance of finding in rekkid shops these days.

I'm not complaining or anything. It's all great stuff. It's just that those two albums managed to hit me in a really big way. The more recent ones are good too, just to a lesser extent for me. As for the old stuff, I probably haven't delved into it as often as I should have, but of what I did hear, it seemed to be pretty consistently garage-band-ish. It's like they went from being one thing to another, and GDU and LYDLS are where the two things were pretty well mixed together.

Anyway, they've got my respect no matter what. Just a statement of preference.

Oh yeah sorry Ean dear boy I misread your post, no I prefer the original as I think the rough edge of SA version suits it better but our boys have done an excellent version of it though as much i klove the new version I think there's a few other songs that would have been better to cover like Can't Go Back, Carry on and Crashing Down

And Ean if you're wondering where your b-sides cds are, they've been sent back to my house as the post office don't have a sense of humour and didn't appreciate the fact i wrote "Please find Enclosed some really filthy hardcore porn!" on the envelope in big letters, I think I'll just go back to drawing silly faces on it instead.

I'll make a point of more carefully listening to the older stuff.

I'm quite surprised it actually came back. I'd have thought you'd have got a postcard saying it had been, ahem, 'confiscated' or something.

For the record, I still haven't had a chance to hear the three new tracks because my wife-to-be won't pony u' the cash for the new CD... in the name of saving money for the wedding next month. I am very, very frustrated.

Sin1758 if you're contemplating letting more SA into your life I highly recommend Hang Time as it has Soul Asylum at their best, Grave Dancers may have been a hell of an album but there's no beating Cartoon, Sometime To Return, Beggars and Choosers and Endless Farewell.

Hey thanks for the recommendations! Will definitely be checking them out, as I can't get "The Judge" out of my head.

b) find them

a couple of weeks ago i put on hang time and the horse they rode in on ( they are as early as i go due the constraints abovead forgotten what great albums they are.

great lyrics, versatile musicians and one of the best voices in rock = great band.
why do i have to ignore you to get your attention?

He's right y'know, I recommend Dave Pirner's solo album Faces and Names and Dan Murphy (their guitarist) and the dude from the Jayhawks Gary something or others side project Golden Smog to who's first album has Chris Mars from the Replacements drumming on it.

Pirners solo album came out about six years ago, its very laid back and about as far away from Soul Asylum as you can get, its got an almost R 'n' B vibe to it, but not shitty chart R 'n' B, I'm taling Marvin Gaye, The temptations kinda thing, I was a bit shocked when i first heard it and i think if i'd have heard that first before Soul Asylum i may have given them a wide birth cuz it's as though While You Where Out never happened. Still worth giving a show though just don't have any expectations and you should be alright, It took me ages to track it down and ended up getting a brand new copy still in its unsealed wrapping for the grand total of 1 cent with 1 dolladr twenty postage from the states so I got it for about 60p.
Pm me and I'll try and get a copy to you.

As for Gold Smog I'm not sure what theyve got without looking it up as I was tagging all my mp3s a while ago and accidentally erased all the info embedded in them, so i only know what the titles are now what albums but i believe they've had three albums out and maybe two eps one of which was a covers ep that has a fantastic version of Starman by Bowie.

edit..............................

They've had five releases

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weird_Tales_%28album%29

Oi Ean, I have a feeling this has gone off track, anychance of shifting this lot to a new topic in the cloakroom as I have a feeling it may go on a bit, ta muchly.

I liked Dave's solo album a lot. Found that most of what I liked about Soul Asylum was in it.
