Ginger London Review

I've never actually seen Ginger acoustically. It doesn't seem right. Ginger should be loud proud and dangerous to know. I almost missed this gig as I left getting tickets until the last possible moment. (Thanks Steve) The evening started off well, I found a purse with £220, credit cards the whole works in the gutter when we parked up. Took me half an hour to find the Police Station as nobody in any of the shops seems to know its location! Got to the Bar Academy just in time to see The Imperial Vipers acoustic set. I've heard of them but not anything by them but after tonight's performance I will be actively seeking them out. They also managed to slip in a cover of 'Ramblin' Rose' by the MC5. Next up was Chris Catalyst guitarist with The Sisters Of Mercy who entertained us no end with his in-between-song stories; Liam Gallagher and his Radox bubble bath & Brian May being his Dad sticks in my mind. His songs were quite good as well. I think he started off his set with his own material but then got into cover versions. 'Take On Me', yes the A-Ha song, was particular good with much audience participation. Onto the main event.... Jon Poole was first out carrying a bag of Asda plastic out door balls, the ones you normally find in Kids play zones, which he through out into the crowd, who promptly through them back. This wasn't an acoustic set at all. Ok Ginger and Jase's guitars were semi acoustic but were plugged into Marshall Amps and Jon Poole's bass was just his normal bass. It was in fact The Sonic Circus minus the drummer. They kicked of the set with the Replacements 'Answer Machine' and then it was Ginger's back catalogue. More Wildhearts tunes were aired this time around with 'I Like Girls' from the SG5 project also thrown in. The theme from 'Taxi' preceded the theme from 'Cheers'. The biggest cheer of the night was when Ginger announced that the Wildhearts would start recording a new album at the end of the year. After the cheering had died down he said he didn't know if it would ever be finished though. I'm sure Ginger could have played all night and we'd still want more. It seems the whole idea behind this mini tour was to get out of debt that the last Sonic Circus accrued. On a personal note I think this is why he was so unhappy when he played Don Hill in NYC. Image if you've just played a sell out tour to great reviews only to be told that you've made a loss. Probably get a good albums worth of material out of it though!

It was a great night. I've never seen Ginger looking so relaxed and happy on stage. I went with my brother who was into the Wildhearts around the time Phuq came out but he was never a huge fan. He's asking me to send him a load of Ginger's stuff now :D

I was at the Southampton Joiners gig the night before and that was great too if a little warm.

I believe I trod on one of Jon's balls on the way out, apologies.

It only took about an hour to get there so I just figured why not. It was worth it just to see the soundman admit he didn't know what all the buttons were for.

It's probably going to be Brixton. It's not as expensive as I thought it would be which is a bonus! :)
