Howling Willie Cunt/ C&W

Postby JSayonara » 9th Jan 07, 04:50

Been Listening to this brilliant slice of obscenity recently and it's piqued my interest in Country and western Music. Anyone out there in Sonic Circus land able to direct me to some good C&W music? (other than the immortal Johnny Cash.) Would be much appreciated especially if you could put album tiltles after artists. Cheers y'all.

Depends what you're after. If you want the old honky tonk country and bluegrass, you can't go much wrong with:

Willie Nelson/ The Outlaws
Hank Williams Sr
Merle Haggard
Carl Perkins (wrote Blue Suede Shoes)
George Jones
Chris LeDoux/ Western Underground

More modern stuff:

Garth Brooks
Tim McGraw
Brooks and Dunn
Alan Jackson
George Strait
Steve Wariner
Alison Krauss & Union Station

They've all got myspaces (except Alison Krauss but here's her site http://www.alisonkrauss.com/) if you want listen.

Jason and the Scorchers! Or Jason Ringenberg's Solo stuff. All Over Creation is really good and includes a collaboration with the Wildhearts, or there's his new one, Empire Builders.

Steve Earle, you can just find a best of pretty much anywhere and it'll have a load of great tunes on. I've got this one The Collection

Ean,
before the Byrds doc tonight, about 8:30, there's a Crosby & Nash gig on.

Gettin back on the country thing,
if ya fancy a bit of British country blues with a bit of techno thrown in Alabama 3 are a must.

A little "winkle heavy there" as the great man once said, whilst I agree with most choices, check out forties/fifties western swing too and the current country/rockabilly hybrid of The Rev'd Horton Heat or the Th' Fabulous Shack Shakers, but MOST OF ALL don't forget the ladies. At least try out:-

Emmylou Harris (Red Dirt Girl, Wrecking Ball - amazing)
Linda Ronstadt
Lucinda Williams
Nancy Griffith

Not to mention the older style ladies like Dolly, Patsy Cline etc. If you can ignore the rhinestones and the big hair there are some fantastic songs and voices out there.
Blimey but I am tired

If you want something a bit more political you could have a listen to David Rovics.

Loads of free downloads of his Acoustic stuff on his website....

this man is correct
the flying burrito brothers are ace

and you should get an album called "almost blue" by the genius that is elvis costello. its a covers album but he still gets his own sound through on all the tracks. he also did his own country styled album called "the delivery man" which you should get too
