Is it just me that can't see the point of download-only singles, when we'll all be buying it on CD in a couple more weeks anyway?

I mean, if the single was to be released on physical formats, with B-sides, I'd buy them all. The downloaders would still download it rather than clutter up their life with meaningless records & CDs, and they'd get multiple purchases from collectors and the chance of advertising their comeback with a big chart hit.

Yeah I know that physical singles can be loss leaders that rarely make a profit, but if Round Records can put out Yeah Yeah Yeah on 7" and CD a year after the event, then why not kick off this campaign with a big bang instead of a damp squib?

I know it's only 79p or whatever, but I've never paid to download a track in my life. If it was to be totally exclusive then I'd relent, but it isn't, it's just one track from the album being leaked a little early.

I probably sound like a real dinosaur but I really don't understand the point of download-only singles unless they're exclusive. It's not like 99% of the people who download it won't be buying the full album anyway, so what's in it for us?

Sorry. I don't understand. I want REAL singles with b-sides!

Totally agree with you Jason. I don't see the point of downloading. I'd rather have it on cd single too.

Yeah agreed aswell. Downloading takes the fun out of having a collection.

Therapy? have been doing this quite recently , there past few singles have been for download only as well as a webgig and a bbc sessions album . They have been quite a success so far.

Hopefully this will make more money for the band and maybe we can hope for more *proper* singles in the future.

Yeah, Ive never paid to download anything, which doesnt mean I download things without paying, Im just a CD person. The ideal download-only single option, like Therapy? do, is have the download with exclusive b-sides, a video (Ok, Rock You Monkeys did, OCFA was meant to have a video but that hasnt materialised yet) and downloadable artwork if you do want to put it on a cd. Hopefully its not just a one song download a fortnight before its CD release or I might not be helping its chances in the Download charts much....

Must admit, when I saw it was a download-only single, I'd automatically assumed that there would be no b-sides, it'd just be the song. to be honest i'll probably download it, just to get it a bit early, but i find it a bit harder to get excited about a download than i do about the prospect of some shiny new cd in my collection...but hey, that's the price i pay for investing emotional worth in owning material goods, eh! :P

This may be a far fetched hope, but if the single gets good press, even if only in Kerrang, teenagers who are not that aware of them have the opportunity to check them out for 79p in a format that they're probably used to using, and therefore as a marketing tool it may be more benfeicial than releasing a CD single at £1.99 each. Obviously we'll miss the B-sides, but they've got to evolve with the times and make some money. I'm not sure there's money to be made in traditional single sales these days anyway. And we always have the choice to resist the temptation to download, and wait for the album.

I'm still hoping that the download single will have exclusive B sides. I'm sure no one's definetly said it hasn't?? (correct me if i'm wrong)

Think i'll keep my Japanese album order open for now and hope at least some of the rumoured extra tracks materialise on that. Didn't someone say that apparently the listing on the HMV Japan site isn't correct?

Yep, it's got fourteen tracks on it in the wrong order, so take the ten off that are on the UK release, pick any two of the remaining four (They're not confirmed anywhere I've seen yet) and you might get lucky.

Yep, that's my plan. I would imagine at least 2 of the 4 tracks would appear on the download single and the others might be exclusive to the Japanese album (turning up in the UK on some other eventual release). That's how i'd do it anyway!

28 Mar 2007 - The Sweetest Song - clarification
In response to speculation about the download only single 'The Sweetest Song', Ginger has confirmed that it's a one song taster, but (for any completionists out there) the version that will appear on this exclusive download will not appear on the album, nor will it be released in any format again.
