That's Rick Rubin. He has a thing for giving artists a back-to-basics sound by stripping off all of the tricks of the trade... reverb and shit. He uses clipping to that same end. Listen to Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt". The song builds in volume throughout and by the end it's clipping all over the place. It gives the impression that it's just too big to fit in your CD player or something.
It doesn't really bother me so much, but I think he could get the same effect in different ways.
